What was originally viewed as a simple broken forearm (which is easier to say when it isn’t your forearm) has become a long-running issue for Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

And now, there’s a chance the complications from his surgeries (plural) could put his chances at opening the season at risk.

According to Ron Borges and Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, Gronkowski’s still battling a stubbon infection, and may need to have yet another surgery to replace the metal plate designed to stabilize the bone.

According to the report, Gronkowski’s near the end of a six-week cycle of antibiotics, but doctors aren’t sure the infection is gone. Doctors plan to go back to take the metal plate out and install a new one to make sure the area is clean. If it isn’t (which they won’t know until they’re in there), they’ll have to make sure the tissue around the plate is clear of infection before putting a new plate in. That could push into the 10 weeks of healing time Gronkowski is said to need before the opener in September.

If the infection has cleared, he should have enough time to get healed for the start of the season, but that’s something they can’t guarantee.

He’s been on antibiotics since his third surgery in February, and doctors are expected to meet with him soon to determine a course of action.

4. Will any RBs be drafted on Day 1?

The 2013 RB class poses a curious crowd. There are plenty of solid guys, but none flashes superstar potential.

Alabama's Eddie Lacy is considered the best of the bunch. But depending on who you ask, he's either the next Trent Richardson or an overrated product of a great O-line. Lacy has had lingering hamstring issues since the end of the year and looked out of shape for his pro day.

Will another RB jump ahead of Lacy? How about UCLA's Johnathan Franklin? Former Wisconsin Badger Montee Ball is another talented rusher, but concerns about his workload will likely make him a Friday pick. Michigan State's Le'Veon Bell has been referred to as a possible 3-down back in the NFL but isn't a hot name when it comes to Round 1.

There are a number of teams picking in the 2nd half of Round 1 that could use some help at the position (Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Denver). But the lingering questions about this RB group make it more likely that squads sit back and grab one in the later rounds.

5. What wild trade will ruin everyone's mock draft?

It happens every year. A top name slips a bit, and a team jumps way up to snag him. It's a question of "when," not "if."

When will one of the teams at the back end of the round move way up? When 1 of the top offensive linemen get past pick 7 or 8? When the first CB is off the board?

Does a team like Minnesota package its 2 picks in the 20s to jump up and grab Tavon Austin? How about someone charging ahead to nab Notre Dame's Tyler Eifert?

Having one of these studs land in a top-notch offense would create the most fantasy football upside

1. Where will Tavon Austin land?

In my opinion he's the most electric playmaker in the draft. Diminutive yet dominant, Austin is ready to make a major impact in the NFL after torching the collegiate circuit at West Virginia. The 5'8, 178-pounder can't wait to get his legs going on the pro stage. But who will grant him the honors?

Austin has been mocked up and down the first 20 picks and is a sure bet to be off the board by the final third of the round. He could go top 10 to a team like the Eagles, Cardinals, Bills or Jets. He could slip to the middle of the round and end up with Miami, Carolina, St. Louis or another team that jumps into the fray.

It's apparent that the 22-year-old is ready to be a force on the field from day 1. But what teams provide the best chance for him to do damage in the fantasy realm?

Eagles: Michael Vick gets another speedy, undersized WR to wreak havoc on the field. But sharing targets with Jeremy Maclin, Desean Jackson and LeSean McCoy doesn't leave Austin completely satiated. If the Eagles unload a receiver, he'd get an obvious bump in the rankings.

Cardinals: Austin takes some of that suffocating pressure off Larry Fitzgerald and becomes an electric slot option for new QB Carson Palmer. He'd be an instant factor in an upgraded passing offense that has questions at the RB spot.

Bills: The Bills haven't brought Austin in for a visit, which is surprising for a team in need of talent. But having him on the field at the same time as C.J. Spiller and Stevie Johnson gives opposing defenses major matchup dilemmas. Austin's fantasy upside is still capped here, due to limited rushing opportunities and a below-average QB.

New York Jets: Mark Sanchez gets some help on paper but can't do anything productive with it. Austin might struggle for WR3 value here.

Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill gets another mouth to feed but is already busy spreading the ball around to Mike Wallace, Brandon Gibson, Brian Hartline and Dustin Keller. Austin's 2013 ceiling is limited.

Panthers: Austin becomes Cam Newton's slot man and enjoys a more productive season than he would with the previous 3 teams on the list. He may not break out in 2013 with Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr. all vying for targets. Rushing opportunities are limited with Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and Newton in the backfield.

Rams: Here's where things could get fun. Sam Bradford needs instant starters to help replace Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson. Austin's ability to tear it up on the turf gives him even more production. Fantasy players revel in anticipation of what should be a perfect fit for the former Mountaineer.

2. What's the upside of these QBs?

Don't count on any of them to carry you to immediate fantasy greatness. This 2013 crop may not even produce a single starter in Week 1. But that doesn't mean it's completely barren of long-term fantasy value.

Geno Smith is widely regarded as the top guy and offers the most fantasy upside due to his big-play ability. He would be the best QB on the roster for a few teams in the top 10, including the Jags, Browns, Bills and Jets. But that doesn't mean he would get the starting job right away. He's got a big arm and the fundamentals to do damage but doesn't always put it together. He's nowhere near Andrew Luck or RGIII. Smith's athleticism gives him a chance in the read-option offense, but it's going to be a while until he's an everyday QB1 in fantasy. He's worth a snag in dynasty leagues.

Matt Barkley is a more polished QB when compared to Smith. He's been a productive passer in a system known for producing NFL QBs (albeit mediocre ones). But his athleticism doesn't stack up, and the fact that Barkley doesn't "wow" in any particular category has hurt his draft status. There are certain to be some growing pains as he adjusts to the next level. Barkley may get a chance to start if picked up by the right team but is unlikely to approach fantasy-starter territory in 2013.

Ryan Nassib is a heady signal-caller with good intangibles. He's just not that exciting. He possesses an average arm and isn't going to fill up the stat sheet. His mobility doesn't offer much in terms of rushing potential. Nassib will be a solid team leader and has potential to develop into an average NFL QB. But we don't see much short- or long-term upside.

E.J. Manuel is an intriguing QB who has a chance to hear his name called Thursday night. The Florida State QB is a mammoth 6'5, 240 pounds but moves much better than expected for someone his size. Mike Mayock listed Manuel as his #2 QB after the NFL Combine. Manuel likely won't start in 2013, but he's got more long-term upside than a lot of the other QBs in his class because of his combination of arm and athleticism. He could be a dynasty stash that pays off down the road.

3. How many WRs will leapfrog Cordarrelle Patterson?

Patterson was once projected as a possible top 10 pick but has fallen down draft boards since. It's not hard to see why people love the kid's upside. His YouTube highlight reel is downright ridiculous. But since his impressive single season at Tennessee, Patterson has done little to cement his place among the elite group of prospects.

Many teams now appear leery of rolling the dice on Patterson. After all, he played just 1 season of D-I football. There are definite concerns about his intelligence and willingness to learn the finer points of the game. He'll need lots of seasoning at the NFL level. Some analysts feel he could slip out of the 1st round entirely.

That shifts the focus to other WRs eager to take Patterson's place in Round 1. They might not have the sheer athleticism and jaw-dropping highlight plays, but they're ready to contribute early and often in 2013. Some of these include:

Keenan Allen, Cal – A 4.71 40 time didn't wow the masses, but Allen is a complete WR with the ability to start right away. He can catch the ball all over the field and is a better route-runner than Patterson. Allen had 98 grabs for 1,343 yards in 2011 before taking a step back this past year. Many blame that on lackluster QB play.

DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson – The experienced junior brings lots of athleticism to go with great ball skills and sustained production at the D-I level. His 1,405 receiving yards were an ACC-best this past year.

Justin Hunter, Tennessee – Patterson's teammate may produce with more weekly consistency at the next level. He boasts solid height at 6'4, which helped him haul in 73 balls for 1,083 yards last season. Unlike Patterson, Hunter is praised for his knowledge of the game. A 2011 knee injury is one of the only red flags here.

Another potential rule change proposed by the competition committee would make it illegal for a runner to lower his head and initiate contact with a tackler in certain instances. It would be a 15-yard penalty.

The proposal would make it a penalty for either the ball carrier or tackler to initiate contact with the crown of the helmet while outside the tackle box. Competition committee members last week called it a necessary safety measure and an obvious next step in the efforts to protect players from injuries.

This I feel this really would change the game of football but mostly fantasy football. This would really effect the top tier running backs that are more aggressive in how they play the game. Players like AP, Trent Richerson, could very well lose points every time they touch the ball in a game. Every fantasy point is important and this penalty would be 15 yards which by most league rules is a deduction of 1.5 points to their total points.

These rules changes are making the game soft, I know they want to protect the players and provent concussion, but this why we pay to watch the game to see the battle between two team, two players to one winner.

Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez has shoulder surgery

By Kevin Patra NFL.com
Published: April 16, 2013 at 08:13 a.m. Updated: April 16, 2013 at 08:23 a.m.

The hits keep coming for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots' receiving corps.

Tight end Aaron Hernandez underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason and likely will miss OTAs and minicamp this spring, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday morning.

Citing two sources, Rapoport said Hernandez will likely be ready by training camp. It is unclear when the injury occurred.

Last week, Hernandez said his goal for the upcoming season was to get through 16 games for the first time in his career.

The news of Hernandez's surgery, coupled with Rob Gronkowski's injury complications, makes the Patriots depth chart look a little less prolific with Daniel Fells, Jake Ballard, Brad Herman and Michael Hoomanawanui the remaining tight ends on the roster.

After the Patriots lost a chance to add wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders earlier this week, the receiving corps looks to be a concern heading into the 2013 NFL Draft.

While Gronk's injury and the lack of an outside receiving threat are issues, as long as Hernandez is back in the fold in time to knock the rust off with Brady before the season starts, the injured shoulder shouldn't be a huge concern.

What happens next however, remains to be seen. Either way, he'll be a member of the New York Giants in 2013.

On Thursday, General Manager Jerry Reese said he can't assume that Cruz will don a blue jersey in week one of the regular season, but that now seems increasingly likely.

Pat Summerall spent 10 years in the NFL as a player. He spent another 40 years describing the game he loved as one of the sport's iconic broadcasters.

Pat Summerall passes away

» NFL broadcaster dies at 82 | Loss of a legend
» Madden: Summerall is 'the voice of football'
» NFL family responds to Summerall's passing

Video:
» Remembering Summerall's brilliant career
» Baldinger recalls working with Summerall
» Summerall's former teammate Gifford reflects

Photos:
» Summerall through the years
Summerall passed away Tuesday at the age of 82, Fox Sports spokesman Dan Bell confirmed to NFL.com and NFL Network.

According to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center spokesman Jeff Carlton, Summerall's wife -- Cheri Summerall -- said Pat died of sudden cardiac arrest.

Summerall called a record 16 Super Bowls on television and 10 more on radio, showing incredible versatility. He transitioned from an analyst early in his career to a play-by-play man with his classic, understated style. Summerall called games on CBS from 1964 to 1993 and then moved to Fox with John Madden as the NFL's signature broadcasting team of the last 30 years. The last championship game Summerall called for Fox was on Feb. 3, 2002.

Madden released a statement regarding the passing of his longtime friend and colleague.

"Pat was my broadcasting partner for a long time, but more than that, he was my friend for all of these years," the statement read. "We never had one argument, and that was because of Pat. He was a great broadcaster and a great man. He always had a joke. Pat never complained, and we never had an unhappy moment. He was something very special. Pat Summerall is the voice of football and always will be."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also released a statement in which he called Summerall "one of the best friends and greatest contributors that the NFL has known."

"It is a sad day in the NFL," Goodell said. "Our hearts go out to Pat's wife, Cheri, and the entire Summerall family. Pat will always be an important part of NFL history."

Summerall primarily was a kicker during his 10-year NFL career, first with the Detroit Lions and the then-Chicago Cardinals before the New York Giants traded for him to play on some terrific teams from 1958 to 1961. Summerall hit one of the most memorable kicks in NFL history during the Giants' 1958 regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns, nailing a game-winning 49-yard field goal through the driving snow to keep New York's season alive.

Two weeks later, Summerall was the Giants' kicker in the 1958 NFL Championship, commonly referred to as "Greatest Game Ever Played." He's certainly in the discussion as one of the greatest broadcasters the game has ever seen, too.

Detroit recently signed Akers soon after Jason Hanson retired.

A trick-shot video - called ``Kickalicious'' - Rugland posted in September has more than 2.7 million views. The video shows him kicking and punting a football through uprights from as far away as 60 yards, from straight on and also from incredible angles. He also kicks a ball to a friend on a boat on a lake, in a moving car, on a skateboard, on a railroad bridge, on a hill, on a bluff overlooking a beach and over trees.

Rugland played amateur soccer in his native Norway before taking an interest in football in 2011 after watching the Super Bowl. He had tryouts for the Lions and New York Jets and has been working out at Michael Husted's pro kicking camp in Florida.

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Rugland said last month that his tryout with the Lions went well even though he tweaked the hamstring in his powerful left leg. He's refined his kicking motion while working with Husted in San Diego since having a tryout with the Jets in December.

Husted has said he's heard from Jan Stenerud, the only pure kicker in the Hall of Fame and also from Norway.

``I grew up idolizing Jan Stenerud as a kid,'' Husted said last month. ``He's excited to see another Norwegian have an opportunity to make it in the NFL.''

Rugland is trying to take a similar route to the NFL as Darren Bennett. The former Australian Rules Football player became a two-time Pro Bowl punter for the San Diego Chargers in the mid-1990s.

``Of course I wouldn't mind having a career like him,'' Rugland said. ``That's a lot to hope for.''

According to Huddle, it has now been admitted by the Jags that MJD did indeed suffer a Lisfranc fracture on his foot in 2012. Many around here have speculated for a while now that this was the case, and that his injury was not a simple foot sprain that Jacksonville had said it was. Reports are that MJD should be running by May and at "100%" by the beginning of June.

So, the concerns for MJD's ability to get on the field and produce have been evident by the drop in his value and the amount of people that want nothing to do with him in FF. Does the confirmation that he indeed had a Lisfranc fracture scare you off or concern you any more than you already were, or is your feelings about MJD and his value still about the same?

It took place on January 19, 2002. The name "Tuck Rule Game" originates from the controversial game-changing play. In the play, Raiders' cornerback Charles Woodson sacked Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady, which in turn, seemingly caused a fumble that was eventually recovered by Raiders' linebacker Greg Biekert.
