Draft Strategy Advice

    Hello,

This is my first year in a dynasty league and the first year of the league as well. For the first year we are doing a combined draft so all rookies are available to be drafted in the the standard free agent draft. We are using standard scoring, 6pts for TDs all around, .5 PPR for WR/TE and we are starting:

    1QB
    2RB
    2WR
    1 RB/WR/TE Flex
    1TE
    1PK
    1DEF

My question is what kind of strategy do I use when building my team for the first time? I landed the 7th pick so what should i be looking for in the first few rounds? Do I snag a young stud QB like Stafford or Newton or do I try to find a lower tier 1 RB or a higher end WR1?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I really have no idea what im doing here.

Its hard to pass up a stud RB if you can its so weak after the studs... in a recent Draft masters I got Matthews and Murray from the 7 spot.
    My 2013 Predictions[Non-PPR]:
    [ ] C.J. Spiller Will Be Top 2 RB(Jan 9th)
[ ] Demaryius Thomas will be the #1 scoring WR in 2013(Feb 13th)

All TDs are 6 points and you can start 2 QBs.  This is pretty easy, you draft a QB in round 1 and 2.  QBs will score more points than any other position, and also load up on QBs, in 2 qb leagues there value is much greater.  How many teams are in this league?

2 QB league...I'd use my first pick on one of Rodgers/Newton/Stafford/Brady/Brees, assuming standard scoring.  After that I'd get an RB, and then best available

You can start 2 QBs so you will want to come out of the 1st 4 rounds with at least 2 of them IMO. Id target QBs and RBs early as you can start 2 QBs and 3 RBs. There is lots of value to be had in laters rounds (5-9 or so) for WRs and TEs.

Well, that changes everything. Go RB early but where you draft from will matter a ton. I would use this forum when you are on the block for advise on all your early picks.

Here are a couple of links to drafts we did here at DC. Different formats but you can get an idea.

    Draft for year two.

Do you get all the implications of that? If not, I'll be happy to elaborate.

That does make a difference.  Here's a few players that should go in the first - Foster, McCoy, Rice, Calvin, Rodgers - are typically the top 5 if one of those guys falls you take them, or auction off your pick to the highest bidder.  After that you should consider the likes of Mathews, AJ Green, and Cam.  And if you are feeling really gutsy, you go Richardson.

    Welcome to Draftcalc hermy65.

the 2QB option is the main deal for your league.
imo If you could get 2 of these guys in the first 2 rounds I would do it:
    Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Stafford, Newton
then you go best available in rounds 3 and 4 between RB and WR  (unless J. Graham is available in the 3rd round because he could produce WR numbers)
NOTE you will want to keep a very close eye on the QB's because you want 3 (bye weeks and injury)
most peoples lives are a direct reflection of the expectations of those around you

what if you have a higher expectation for yourself than those you associate with?

Go RB/RB imo. I drafted Foster in round one of DC1 and Graham in round 2. I regret taking Graham in round 2 as it ruined my entire draft plan. I was fighting hard to find a 2nd runningback that I liked and forced my self to give up valuable depth to trade up and nab a decent one. If its not a 2QB league, I suggest going RB/RB/WR/WR/QB/TE. Good luck and welcome to DC Nation!
