I have been talking about the “WR-WR Draft Strategy” for months now, and I have to say, I continue finding myself executing this unconventional approach in draft after draft. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge supporter of the “best player available” approach (known as BPA), however, the thing is, Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Julio Jones, and now Dez Bryant, are consistently the best players available in that 1.07-2.07 range. Or, even if I like a runner in that range, I like those four receivers just as much, so I’m still following my Best Player Available Approach, I’m just rocking it in “WR-WR fashion” is all.
The WR-WR Strategy is certainly NOT for everyone, in fact, you almost have to want to have a weak-looking (to everyone else, but not to you) RB2. If that sounds scary, if you’re a safe drafter, you may want to head in another direction. I love landing breakout runners, and I’m rather good at it, so that could be one reason this approach is grabbing my attention so much this year… I have built some monster teams using the approach. I mean monster! I’ll be honest, I have built some teams using the approach that I haven’t loves as much as others, and usually that’s because I executed the approach from a 1.11 or 1.12 draft slot (like below). The 1.11 or 1.12 slots can work if a few runners fall (that you feel shouldn’t, aka sleepers), but if the rushers go too fast, you can often be left waiting way too long for your first runner, or your bookend set of runners… Here is an example of an Expert League Draft I just participated in over at Fleaflicker. I was handed the 1.11 draft slot, and I went WR-WR-RB-QB, something I don’t usually do when I go WR-WR, as I usually go WR-WR-RB-RB; however, in research fashion, I wanted to try this approach even passing on my RB2 until my 5th-drafted player. Here is how things worked out:
[level-all]
WR-WR Draft Strategy From 1.11 | Fleaflicker Draft
QB: Tom Brady (4.02)
RB1: Darren McFadden (3.11)
RB2: Montee Ball (6.02)
WR1: AJ Green (1.11)
WR2: Julio Jones (2.02)
Flex: Kenny Britt (7.11) / or Chris Ivory (5.11)
TE: Julius Thomas (11.11)
Note: I fully expect Montee Ball to explode at some point this season, and I’m starting him in Week 1. It’s against the grain – for now. While any player can get ‘CJ Spillered’, and benched for far too long, I believe talent will shine through in a big way!
My thoughts: Again, I’m not on here to suggest that this team is risk-free, and I have a better WR-WR example below, but I wanted to share this still-solid squad above that was acquired using the strategy. This approach is such that one can create a roster that has two of AJ Green, Julio Jones, Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant, and still roster running backs like: Darren McFadden, Shane Vereen, Lamar Miller, Montee Ball, Gio Bernard, etc, and if one goes QB early, the RBs in this approach become even more risky, but it is still a solid approach any way that you spin it.
WR-WR Draft Strategy From the 1.06-1.08 Draft Slots
Again, that team above is not my best WR-WR constructed team, I was merely sharing the WR-WR Approach from the 1.11 draft slot. From the 1.06-1.08, one can land an even better team, one like:
QB: Robert Griffin III (5th)
RB1: Lamar Miller (3rd)
RB2: Montee Ball (6th)
WR1: AJ Green (1st)
WR2: Julio Jones (2nd)
Flex: Eddie Lacy (4th)
TE: Julius Thomas (10th)
That’s the usual result when drafting WR-WR from the 1.06-1.08, at least in drafts I’m cranking out! Every league is different, and the flow of any draft can certainly change for the better, or worse, at any given moment.
WR-WR-WR Draft Strategy | Auction Drafting
Yeah, you heard me, but this is more for the auction crowd. If you thought WR-WR was extremely-risky, but full of insane-like reward, multiply that by a couple when it comes to this approach. Again, as I mentioned above, these bold approaches come with risks, know that, and also accept the fact that you will be “going bold” at at least one of your starting spots, and you will have to like itching to see some of your “stash” players get a chance to play (like my favorite two this year, Bernard Pierce and Christine Michael). A team like the one below would put nails in coffins if an unstoppable “stash” like Pierce all of the sudden turns into a top 5-10RB for your squad. Can you count on “stash” players to deliver? Absolutely not, that’s not what I’m saying, but if you are creative, innovative and try and play five steps ahead, you’re going to be successful. In a PPR, dynasty auction draft, where each team was given $200 to spend, I built this team, and I would pit it up against any team I’ve ever seen so far this year:
QB: Andrew Luck $22
RB1: Lamar Miller $18
RB2: Montee Ball $14
WR1: AJ Green $45
WR2: Julio Jones $39
Flex: Dez Bryant $42
TE: Julius Thomas $1
Bench: Mark Ingram $5, TY Hilton $8. Bernard Pierce $2, Christine Michael $1, Kenbrell Thompkins $1, and not much else (by design).
Conclusion
If you play in multiple leagues, I urge all of you to test out one of these approaches in at least one league, as it’s quite fun and rewarding. The trick is to ensure that you are buying players low, players that have huge upside… David Wilson, recently, is an example of a runner you could have acquired inside even a WR-WR approach, as he was a 3rd-rounder and could have been your third-round pick (mixed with two of Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Julio Jones, at which time could be paired with Lamar Miller, Montee Ball, Shane Vereen and TY Hilton/Chris Givens types. Forget about landing David Wilson as a 3rd-rounder at this point, as his value has shot up with the news about Andre Brown breaking his leg, but other players, like Miller and Ball still remain, players that can do what Wilson just did (go from rags to riches). Ball is so doubted right now, I love it, and as I keep saying, if anyone thinks that Ball’s workload and future is currently set in stone heading into Week 1, and even if he starts off slow, I have a bridge to sell ya! Russell Wilson was doubted just as much, and I stuck by the guy… as you may remember, as doubted as he was this time last year, we took him into Week 1 as our No. 1 Bold Prediction of 2013. We were crazy, everyone said. Everyone says I’m crazy for standing by Ball as a top 5-10RB heading into 2013 and beyond. Well, time will tell!
[/level-all]
Smitty, that is the kind of thinking that wins. I don’t post often here, but when i do, it involves the Stud WR theory of drafting. I usually draft at the end of the first round. I have employed the Stud WR strategy for 3 years now, going on 4. Last year my WR’s were AJ Green, J Jones, B Marshall, and D Bryant in a 12 team league, that starts 3 WR/TE and a Flex which I almost always used a WR.
I went with this strategy this year because A. it works and B. I was sick of hearing virtually every ‘expert’ say you had to go RB heavy. I usually try to trade out of the first round and grab an extra 2nd and 3rd or 4th round pick but found no takers this year. So picking at the 1-12 slot, Calvin Johnson fell to me, then at 2-1 I went with Dez. I was hoping to pick up Miller or Wilson at the next turn, but When it came back around to me the best option at RB was Lacey GB, so I doubled down and went with L Fitzgerald and a swing for the fences pick of R Gronkowski. So I went WR-WR-WR-WR, again, in a league that starts 3 WR and a Flex. At this point, I just load up with as much high side RB’s as I can for the rest of the draft, Bernard, Vereen, Pierce, Pead, Rodgers, Powell, Ivory, K Davis and L James. I was hoping to have a shot at to be able to land Michael but waited a little too long, and missing him hurt a lot.
I am not as sold on this team as I was last years, but I should dominate the WR/Flex position, hold even at QB (Griffin III), and hope that at least one RB breaks out. If he does, I will be in good shape. As you put it, this is risky business, I could fall flat on my face, or dominate. That is how I like to play the game.
Thanks for commenting, i always enjoy your comments, so post more!!
I usually do this if I can not secure a top 7 RB. With a ton of quarterbacks neck and neck at the top, it only makes sense to draft WR-WR since the batch of RB’s in the 2nd round are about as good as those in the 3rd anyway.
Drafted in 12 team 1/2 pt PPR: AJ/Dez/LMiller/McFadden/Ball/Hilton/Romo/Cook/Bell/Britt/Givens/Thompkins
Yahoo gave me a D+ scorecard, but I think I did alright
I think you did more than alright! Great job!
Just did a 12 team draft picked 4th got Martin in 1st, my plan was green, julio, or d thomas all gone so I went Graham in 2nd and wanted a wr1 so took fitzgerald in 3rd. My original plan was to go elite wr in 2nd and d wilson in 3rd but didnt get what I wanted. Here is my team , I have both Graham and Gronk who I can flex should I trade one of them??? Was thinking Gronk for L Miller or graham and ivory for Foster. 12 team .5 ppr all tds worth 6
QB Newton
RB Martin
RB Ball
WR Fitzgerald
WR Amendola
TE Graham
Flex Gronk
Bench – Bell ( should be back sooner) , Givens ( flex him prob until Gronk back) , Ivory ( might have to flex to start ) , Blackmon, Fred Jackson, C Patterson
I like the Graham, Gronk flex. Innovative!!
I would trade for Miller first, if you can pull that off. If not, I also like the Foster move, then just snag Julius Thomas if available (while you wait on Gronk). Nice job. I have gone the Jimmy Graham route once with a team this year, and I just can’t say I love the team. Not when Cook, Thomas and others can do so well at the position this year, I tend to just feel my rosters are better avoiding taking Graham so early. It’s still a good team, just not my usual approach. Total contender if Ball works out well, or Ivory does.
12 team pick 4
QB Luck
RB Spiller
Miller
WR Thomas
Cruz
Flex Vereen
TE J Thomas
Bench Thompkins, Gordon, Givens, L Bell, Hillman, Weeden
Yahoo predicts this team to go 2-12 this year.
Very solid team!
Hey Smitty,
I have my last draft coming up on Monday. It is a 12 team, .5ppr keeper league, all TD’s are 6 pts, and we start 1 QB, 2 RB’s, 3 WR’s, and 1 TE, k, def
I have the 11th pick. My keepers are Dez Bryant (will be my 3rd round pick), and CJ Spiller (will be my 9th round pick)
My question is: how would you start the draft? Would you go WR-WR and possibly have a WR corps of AJ, Julio, and Dez (along with Spiller)? Or go QB (Brees or Rodgers) and Jimmy G?
Knowing my keepers are Spiller & Dez, what direction would you go in the opening rounds?
Thanks!
The WR approach for sure. Go cheap and sneaky at RB2 (Gio, Ball!!, or Vereen… Or Lacy).. I’d trade up if you have to in order to land those 3 WRs!
Smitty,
Thanks for the response yesterday but now with Brown getting hurt it changes everything. I have the 6 slot and 7 slot in two different 14 team leagues. If I get TRich in the 1st, I now may have to take DWilson in the second cause he won’t be there in the third. My question was would you pass on Julio or DThomas and take DWilson in the 2nd? And then get a VJax in the third and hoping to get a LMiller/Lacy/McFadden in the 4th? Or would u pass on DWilson in the second if I have a shot at an elite WR?
I do one approach in one league and try the other in the second league. I like Julio and Wilson that much! And that helps mix things up in case injury strikes!
12 team ppr pick 4
QB Kaep
RB Charles, Ridley
WR Thomas, Nicks
Flex Hilton
TE Cook
Bench: Gio, Bradshaw, Pierce, Randle, Alshon, Moreno, Bradford
Yahoo predicts this team will be 6 – 7 this year and finish 6th overall.
I like it. Not sure why I shy away from Ridley at his ADP, but he can certainly earn his value, not saying he can’t. Nice job. As I tell everyone I meet, even those in the Taco Bell drive thru, grab Bernard Pierce and Christine Michael this year and stash ‘em!
Well my question above may be pointless now as DWilson is going at the top of every 2nd round now so he isn’t falling, and LMiller isn’t lasting into the 4th anymore? Dang Andre Brown messed everything up.
Better for Julio falling, then! Miller falls in some drafts, and not in others. Varies for sure!
I think it worked!!! Picking from the 8th slot.
Dez Bryant rd1
AJ Green rd2
Cam Newton rd3
David Wilson rd4
Lamar Miller rd5
Jordy Nelson rd6
Shane Vereen rd7
Chris Givens rd8
nice work!
Was this a mock? That team rocks!
Real team no mock
Wow. That’s a 9 out of 10 at least, my friend. At least. Nice squad.
Thx,week one Givens or Vereen in the flex spot?
Givens, but that’s close. Vereen might explode right away, tough to say for sure.
That is a great draft!
It’s more than great, yep! I doubt you can land Wilson again, though, at even a 3rd round spot. His value took off last night after the Andre Brown (broken leg) news set in. But that’s ok, my answer is a late grab of Montee Ball!
Hey Smitty i was able to trade Graham and Ivory for Foster and Al Jeffrey. Since I have Gronk figured why not. I listened to you and got my rb2 in foster. I m trying to trade foster now for T Richardson to pair with Doug Martin my team now, what do u think? Who do I drop since i need a TE and J Thomas on waiver wire do I drop Fred Jackson , C Patterson , or A Jeffrey???? 12 team . 5 ppr. Also Im trying to get Tate now from someone else should I trade Blackmon for him or someone else.
QB Cam
RB Martin
RB Foster
Wr Fitzgerald
Wr Amendola
Te Gronk
Flex Ball
Bench Bell , Givens, Blackmon, Jefferey, F Jackson, Patterson
DEF Tampa since there playing the Jets, any good Defense pick for week 2?
Nice job. Trading for Foster isn’t for everyone, and I only love the idea now because he can be had as a top 15-20 overall player in dynasty formats (Graham/Ivory proves that). We don’t know what we’re getting with Ivory in my opinion, and I doubt any Jet right now from a fantasy perspective. I do that trade all day long, but I love rolling the dice. Also, Jeffery could have a good WR3 season this year, but would explode if Marshall (hip) missed time. It’s possible given all the news reporting about Marshall not feeling he is 100%.
You need Tate. Yes, I trade Blackmon for him in a second. I trade Patterson, FJax for him. I keep Givens, and I try my best to keep Bell if I’m you, but you’re not crazy to give Bell for Tate to ensure that top 10RB production, which Tate helps secure.
Do try to get TRich for Foster, though, so get Tate if that doesn’t workout.
Had a 12-Team Standard (non-PPR) Keeper league draft tonight.
QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/TE/(W/R/T)/K/DST + 5 Bench
Keep up to 3 players (for a pick 2 rds before they were selected last yr).
Can’t keep the 1st 3 rds.
Keeping Dez Bryant (for 2nd rd pick), Cecil Shorts (10th Rd.), & Ja.Jones (11th).
Was dealt the 10 Spot.
Ended up with:
QB- Brady (3.10), Bradford (12.03)
RB- TRich (1.10), Miller (4.03), Vereen (6.03), Tate (8.03)
WR- Dez Bryant (K-2nd), Shorts (K-10th), Ja.Jones (K-11th), Gordon (6.03)
TE- V.Davis (5.10), Cameron (9.10)
K- Dawson (13.03)
DST- Steelers (14.10)
I wasn’t completely thrilled with the way things fell. QBs got run on really early, but if I had to do it again I might grab RGIII in the 5th & tried to land a stronger WR2. I also might’ve gone with Cook a round or two later than Davis. I felt like 5.10 was a good place to reach for V.Davis though. I’ll grab Cook in my other leagues. Nobody else fell to me that I liked (Hilton, Ant.Brown, Givens, etc.). On the bright side, I’m going to love the option of keeping Vereen, Miller, & Gordon around for a few years.
I noticed that TE Julius Thomas went undrafted. Should I drop Cameron for him & split some of these Browns up. Can’t believe I ended up with 3, LOL.
Any other advice or trade suggestions would always be much appreciated.
Thanks
Nice work. Pretty standard looking DC Nation team, but with the upgrade QB spot, which is hard to pull off with Dez, TRich and Miller, so nice job with your keeper management skills! I like Thomas more, but I’m rolling the dice there and am probably in the minority. Most will say Cameron, and he is the safe pick.
^^There was meant to be a ? mark somewhere in that run-on sentence sorry
& Gordon was 7.10, not 6.03
Again, nice work!
Wr-wr draftef team in a 12 team, ppr, redraft; received a trade offer; need advice
My team: starters; Eli, Lamar, Gio, CJ, AJ Green, k. Rudolph, flex(welker), Hartley, Ravens
Reserves: Bradford, j.franklin, D. Richardson, I.Pead, J.Gordan, K.wright, D.Hompkins
Trade offer: Calvin & J. Franklin for McCoy & b.brown ( he has lacy)
I say you roll with the WR/WR as planned, but if you love McCoy, it’s not a bad move (since you’re getting Brown). Can you trade Eli and Welker for a slightly better QB, or QB some view as slightly better (RG3)? The throw Gordon in your flex spot. You do something crafty like that, using just Welker or just Gordon, with Eli, or without him, and I think this team you drafted goes from good to very, very good.
Nice work, and McCoy (with Brown) or Calvin, you can’t go wrong.
I’m having doubts. So help me out please. I took the Wr, Wr, Wr approach. I had the 11th pick in a 12 team league. I went with Aj Green, Julio and Cobb.
QB: Andrew Luck
RB: Lamar Miller
RB: Shane Vereen
WR: AJ Green
WR: Julio Jones
FL: Randall Cobb
TE: Fred Davis
DS: Cowboys
K: Matt Bryant
Bench: Gio Bernard, Leveon Bell, Bernard Pierce, Kenny Britt, DeAndre Hopkins, Corderelle Patterson and Aaron Dobson.
Should I trade for a RB and/or TE?
Well, as the article talks about, I really only do WR-WR or WR-WR-WR if you’re getting the big top four in those spots (AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones and Dez Bryant). I don’t use it with any other WRs, in any of those slots. So, in the WR-WR-WR example, it’s typically only an Auction Draft one can acquire 3 of those players in.
You did this with Cobb, which still turned out ok, though. I’m rather surprised you still landed Lamar Miller, Andrew Luck, Shane Vereen and Gio Bernard with that approach.
I like it, my friend. I think you landed a very good squad. While I don’t think you need to trade at all, Gio (once his value increases even a bit more) with Cobb for Dez? Or, maybe a David Wilson or Forte? Those are the only moves I’d try to make, I WOULD NOT trade any of: Miller, AJG or Julio!!!!
Thx you! Appreciate it. Going to hunt for a QB upgrade.
1. Smitty, you’re very high on Julio, and although I agree (impossible not to), that he’s a top 5 WR in talent & ability to produce, there were 6 games last year where he had 6 points or less. Any reason in particular that you are SO HIGH on him this year? I can’t help but feel like Dez, AJ, Calvin, Marshall are top 4. Then Julio, Demaryius and several others. Julio & Demaryius have to deal w/ extreme talent around them & their teams are so good, they won’t have to air it out as often as many other teams in this league, such as Larry Fitz’s Cardinals or Dwayne Bowe’s Chiefs or even V Jax’s Bucs, Julio especially w/ the beast S Jax now in there for goal-line runs. I’m not saying I necessarily disagree with you, but I’m having a hard time buying into him particularly this year at the same high level you have him on, would love to hear why.
2. I have a BIG DRAFT at 2 pm today and have the dreaded 1.11 spot so I’m just very torn on a few things, including whether or not to grab Jimmy (probably not goin that route). The league is full of knowledgeable players so I know the best RBs available will be MAYBE Alfred Morris, definitely Ridley, CJ2K, Forte, & Bush. Calvin & almost definitely Dez will be gone. It puts me in an extremely strange spot because at best I’d end up with AJ & Demaryius or AJ & Julio & any 2 of the 4 (Gio, Lacy, Miller, Ball) as my two RBs, but I feel like WR scoring is more fluky than RB scoring and there’s a LOT of evidence suggesting Bowe & Fitz could be just as good (especially week to week) as the elite 4/6. So many others could easily outscore top dogs too, like Roddy, Jordy, Cobb, Shorts, Gordon, etc. Wouldn’t it be much tougher for Lacy, Ball, Miller to compare to AP, Trent, Charles, Spiller most weeks than the lower WRs I mentioned outscoring the elite?
3. Ridley, you have him ranked at 21, behind even Frank Gore, but the Pats run more plays than anyone in the NFL by a longshot & Ridley led the league last year in goal-line attempts. The Pats will probably run the ball even more this year, and they were already the 3rd heaviest run team in 2012. So I’m just’ confused on why you don’t see him having a potential MONSTER year. Same goes for Allfred Morris being ranked behind Lamar Miller after what he did last year & his apparent extra usage this year as a pass-catcher.
Sorry for the lengthy post, just figured I’d put this all into one comment than posting three different comments. Can’t wait to read your response, hopefully it’s before my draft. Lol
1. Sometimes there aren’t tangible things to offer. Sometimes it’s more about gut than evidence, meaning you just feel the breakout coming. I mean, he has already had a breakout season in a way, but that monster “next step” is coming, at least that’s the feeling I get. I got the same feeling about Dez Bryant last year when most called me nuts. Most said, when I ranked him No. 3-4 all off-season (and he was a 4th to 6th rounder lol), “Smitty, what about Dez makes you think he will be a top 3-4 WR?”… my answer to those questions was similar to my Julio answer. Not to mention, Roddy is going to slow a bit, which held Julio back a touch last year, or can be attributed to some of those smaller fantasy outings you mentioned. Receivers usually breakout during their third NFL season… this is Julio’s third NFL season, and when these “3rd-year breakouts” have a big sophomore campaign, and you sense momentum building heading into that third year, that’s an indication that the “big step forward” is coming. Not only is Julio in the class with Calvin, Dez and AJG, Julio, as well as any of those four, is capable of being the No. 1 WR this year.
As for No. 2, I mean we could literally go through the rankings and find all kinds of guys that are ranked lower than most ADPs suggest, and sometimes it’s not the player I doubt, it’s just liking other players more. Lamar over Morris can be explained via the Upside Board. Morris is a safe 12-15 overall pick, but his ceiling is likely not inside the top 5 overall RBs. While Miller has more risk than Morris, risk that could essentially having him flat-out bust this year, his ceiling is higher if you ask me, again explained on the Upside Board. Since the rankings are PPR, and Ridley catches like 6 passes a year, he falls quite a bit. I still like him, but I also see Vereen having a big year, something that could cut into Ridley’s carries/touches/playing time.
I hear ya, some of the “Upside” players are high on the rankings, and arguments can be made against having those “Upside” players so high. However, if I ranked safe and didn’t try to predict the next risers (like this year’s Morris), well, then no one would have landed Dez Bryant, Russell Wilson and CJ Spiller as 6th- to 8th-round picks last year. Bold is how we roll, my friend!
Thanks a lot Smitty. I completely understand what you’re saying, makes sense to me!
My one concern is…….because of the 11th spot, I feel like I’d rather have Morris/Forte or Ridley/Forte or even Forte/Bush WITH Dwayne Bowe & Eric Derkcer/Miles Austion than Gio/Lacy with Dez/AJ & Demaryius/Marshall.
Since Calvin and almost definitely Dez will be taken in the top 10, that means only 8 RBs will be gone, pretty easy for me to predict which 8, so my question is, especially given David Wilson’s spike in upside & potential (a huge Giants fan may take him in one of the first 10 spots, there are several huge Giants fans before me as well as 2 huge Cowboys fans, which is why I think Dez will go unfortunately). so there could be some very good RBs left at 11….do you think given that situation you would go RB/WR, likely still grab either AJ/Demaryius/Julio/Marshall & pair him w/ Ridley/Morris/Forte…maybe even Trent. Rice, Lynch, or McCoy?
Trent is my No. 1 overall player this year, so I love him if he should fall and I’d abort all WR in the first plans. If you go WR/WR, you have to know when to abort and not just stick to the plan. I can’t tell you how many times I have people coming to me telling me they tried the WR/WR but informed me that Calvin, Julio, Dez and AJG weren’t available with their second round pick, yet they still move forward with the strategy, which I clearly recommend against. This WR/WR only works well, IMO, using two of Calvin, AJG, Dez and Julio. So know that.
My question to people on the fence regarding the WR/WR approach is, do you like and understand the risks ? There are risks it backfires and the RBs left aren’t to your liking, but 8 times out of 10, runners fall that I love, and I get Lamar Miller AND my choice of two of Gio, Ball, Vereen, Lacy. If drafting from the 1.11 draft slot, and PPR (and even in some non-PPR), I take two of Calvin/Julio/Dez/AJG, with Miller, and Lacy with Ball, every time, but that’s me, and that’s if TRich isn’t falling to that 1.11.
One can build a winner 10 different ways, no approach is wrong that you mentioned, but I just love the WR/WR this year.
yes!!! this is why i came back this year baby…smitty and the dc crew get me pumped up boy! Smitty is fearless and gives you the bold prediction the other guys are scared to give, and you know what? HES RIGHT!!!!
Thanks, bro! Glad to have ya!
Smitty, I went WR/WR….& I couldn’t be happier!! 12 team, non-ppr, big-money
QB – Romo
WR – Dez
WR – AJ Green
RB – Miller
RB – Lacy
Flex – Gio
TE – Jordan Cameron
K – Kai Forbath
D – Bengals
Bench – Josh Gordon, Cecil Shorts, Justin Blackmon, Chris Givens, Kendall Hunter, Christine Michael
BOOM!!
Smitty, I’d like to get your advice on a draft I have coming up tonight.
It’s a 12-team, 20-round, PPR (1 pt for WRs/RBs & 1.5 pt for TEs), 4-pt passing TD, big money. Starting lineup is: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex (RB/WR/TE), 1 K, 1 DEF.
I have the 7th pick. I love the WR-WR strategy and since it’s a PPR league, I’d like to have a WR in both of my flexes as well (so I’d be starting 4 WRs). I think the best way to work this out from a draft perspective would be to take one of the elite WRs in each of the first 2 rounds, take TY Hilton as my 4th WR (and 2nd flex) in the 6th round and grab my 3rd WR somewhere in between (probably 4th round). I think this would allow me to take Miller as my RB1 in the 3rd and Montee Ball as my RB2 in the 5th. My goal is to basically start 4 WR1s (with Hilton being that 4th potential WR1). In the 4th round, I’d probably take somebody like Cruz (if he’s still there) or Bowe (I’m higher on Bowe than you are; think he could end up as a low-end WR1 this year; dude’s a beast and Andy Reid is going to make sure the beast gets fed).
I would then target Jared Cook as my TE in the 7th Round. I’m really high on Cook this year though so if I think I need to take him in the 6th, I’d probably pull the trigger there and then target Givens as my 4th WR in the 7th round if Hilton isn’t there.
My plan is to take whoever QB12 ends up being in the 8th or 9th round, and following that up with Vick in the 10th round. I think Vick is prime for a career year. Guys like him and McCoy were built for Chip Kelly’s offense. My thinking is that while he’s healthy, I have a Top 3/5 QB in Vick and if he gets hurt, I’d still have somebody like Romo.
For my bench RBs behind Miller and Ball, I’d target Pierce in the 8th/9th, Christine Michael in the 11th, and a few more flyers after.
With the scoring and lineup rules in mind, let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions. Obviously, I’d be lighter at RB, but I think this could be a dynamite team with 4 WRs starting like the above.
