What to do heading into Week 3?

Players To Start Worrying About?
[level-all]

Time To Worry!

David Wilson – RB NYG

As much as we love this guy, DC Nation, it’s time to panic – at least a bit. How much? Well, that’s the tricky part, because if you sell too low, and he rebounds, as we are only two weeks into the season, you could make the situation more painful than it currently is, as watching him thrive knowing you endured the “slump” and didn’t enjoy any of the strong performances, well, that could sting. On the flip side, you don’t want to throw good money after bad, meaning at some point, before things get worse, and they may or may not, one could attempt to make some sort of creative trade that sends Wilson packing. The point is, don’t sell-low, but if you can sell creative, sell before that chance vanishes. What’s creative? Two-for-one trades are always creative, for example trading away David Wilson for an Eddie Lacy (injured- monitor his health!) and TY Hilton or Chris Givens. Now, I was screaming “buy-low” all last week regarding both Hilton and Givens, and with both having monster games in Week 2 (Hilton 6 receptions for 124 yards and Givens 5 receptions for 105 yards), that may be tough this week, but those are the types of players you want to creatively trade for in a two-for-one type of deal. Maybe go after a struggling Trent Richardson? Even if you had to give more, that’s a great route to take. And, if you have some running back depth and can do a trade that sends Wilson packing in exchange for one single receiver, you may want to take a stab at Demaryius Thomas, who disappointed owners this week with just 5 receptions for 54 yards. Am I suggesting that everyone jump ship on Wilson? No, there are ways to laterally trade out of risky-type players… sometimes that’s buying other risky players, so know that in order to get max value, you sometimes have to take yet another calculated risk… whatever you do, be CERTAIN to run your trade ideas by our awesome forum community before you make them!

Montee Ball – RB DEN

I could debate this topic all day long with the doubters, but if you doubt Montee Ball’s talent level, nothing is going to change your mind. I, however, still love this kid’s upside down the road, but of course I do not like his current situation. Ball was handed a touchdown opportunity early in Sunday’s Week 2 contest, and what does he do? He fumbles the ball into the end zone instead of punching in the score. As a forum user said yesterday, had Ball punched that score into the end zone, we might be having an entirely different conversation in regards to Montee Ball heading into Weeks 3-16. The thing is, though, he didn’t score, and he did fumble… now, Ball is likely forced to wait for a later opportunity. Will that be soon? Will it be in two weeks, or 10? Will his shot ever come, or will it at least come at some point this year? Clearly none of us have the answers to these questions, but I can say that there is zero chance I drop Ball in any format, so asking me if he is drop worthy is a waste of time! Also, I’m still buying low in all formats, as Ball will likely fall into the RB4/5 range value-wise in redraft, and he probably isn’t worth much more than a RB4 in dynasty. Investing at that price tag is highly recommended, as the risk is very low and the upside is very high (because, remember, I believe in his talent level – If you do not believe in his talent, must move on and do your thing!). No one should have spent a lot to acquire Ball in redraft, as his ADP was very reasonable, so waiting, for current owners, is the only move.

Reggie Bush – RB DET

Reggie Bush gave his fantasy owners a big scare in Week 2, as he suffered a knee injury and was down on the field for a while before exiting the game… he did return, though. Bush will have an MRI, and he was quoted after the game suggesting that he isn’t too concerned about the knee. Even if Bush escapes a long-term issue here, Bush always seems to miss time, and his knees are a constant concern. Joique Bell might also have carved out a big rushing role moving forward, even if Bush starts Week 3… Bell rushed 8 times for 31 yards and caught 5 passes for 41 yards in the Lions’ Week 2 loss to the Cardinals. Don’t sell-low, but just keep an open mind if the right deal, or trade idea, comes along. And, as always, run all deals and ideas by our awesome forum community!

Steven Jackson – RB ATL

Steven Jackson left Sunday’s Week 2 contest against the Rams with a thigh injury. While this injury may not keep him out long — be sure to stay on top of the news — the guy has mileage that no other running back has. Injury is a big concern if you ask me, and once he has some more success (after getting back onto the field), consider selling high if the price is right! Just be sure to sell-high! Need ideas? Post a comment below, or jump on our forums! Don’t sell-low, though!!!

[/level-all]

Do Not Panic Yet!
[level-all]

Don’t Panic Yet!

Trent Richardson – RB CLE

I’m not happy with his slow start. Honestly, I’m up in arms about it. However, I think the return of Josh Gordon will help matters a ton, and I think Cleveland will HAVE TO run the ball more. There is very little chance that the Browns’ coaching staff continues to give Richardson 47 rushing-yard (2 receptions for 30 yards) and 58 rushing-yard (5 receptions for 21 yards) type workloads. Gordon is a huge vertical threat, and Minnesota is a fantastic match-up for T-Rich in Week 3. It’s buy-low time! Selling low is just a bad idea at this point.

Jared Cook – TE STL

After pulling in 7 receptions for 141 yards and 2TDs in Week 1, Jared Cook disappointed a lot of fantasy owners in Week 2, as he pulled in just 1 receptions for 10 yards. There isn’t much to say here but buy-low. Any other type of thinking is just knee-jerk reaction. The dude is a beast and is going to have an amazing season. If you think the Cook owner in your league might be worried that his Week 1 breakout party was a fluke, buy-low!

Waiver Wire Advice
[level-all]

Add/Drop Heading Into Week 3

Joique Bell – RB DET

With Reggie Bush (knee) banged up, Joique Bell could be quite valuable moving forward. Even if Bush heals up fast, and is even on the field in Week 3, Bell is a sneaky flex play even in his current “back-up” role. He may not be available in larger leagues, but he could be available in smaller leagues. Either way, check your free agent player pool!

Eddie Royal – WR SD

Eddie Royal pulled in 7 passes for 90 yards and had three touchdowns in Sunday’s 33-30 Week 2 win over the Eagles. Wow, what a start, as he now has 5TDs through the first two weeks of the season. It’s highly unlikely Royal even maintains a fantasy WR2-type value moving forward, but he should be added in all formats and can be trusted as a strong fantasy WR3 moving forward!

James Starks – RB GB

Eddie Lacy suffered a concussion in Week 2, which opened the door for James Starks, who rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown in Green Bay’s Week 2 win over the Redskins. He also pulled in 4 receptions for 36 yards. While Starks is a must-add in all formats, given how productive he can be if starting, it’s important to curb expectations a bit, as Lacy is the clear starter upon his return. Lacy has always concerned me for the long-term (toe/foot), and this injury, while sometimes a freak occurrence, doesn’t help matters. That said, I am still rather confident that Lacy, at his current low-end RB2/flex-type value, is a good buy-low player heading into Weeks 3-16. Monitor his health before you pull the trigger on any trades, though, as things change fast with the way teams report injuries these days.

Marlon Brown – WR BAL

Marlon Brown is starting to look like a strong fantasy WR3/4 moving forward, as he has the following lines through two weeks of play: 4 receptions for 65 yards and 1TD in Week 1, and 4 receptions for 45 yards and 1TD in Week 2.

I would of course try and trade Cook or Thomas, depending on who commands more. Having both is nice, but why not upgrade your line up, but make sure you’re upgrading a WR, RB or QB significantly, or getting a player that can contribute (last week it was Hilton, Givens, etc, but that might be too late this week).

What do you think about Moreno? Is it worth giving up my waiver priority to get him? Wilson gamble not working out for me at RB2 currently and he looks like he’ll be getting most of the touches for the next little while

Moreno is absolutely worth a waiver grab. Who knows how long he gets starter carries, but he surely earned it, as tough is it is to say given I’m waiting on Montee Ball to emerge. Moreno hasn’t exactly proven he can stay healthy as a starter, so Ball still might be left an open door in bit, time will tell, but until then Moreno is the guy I’d imagine.

    Most depressing thread ever.

I have David Wilson AND Montee Ball in almost every league I’m in.

As I always say, you have to mix up your teams to avoid such a thing. Bust or injury, you don’t want one injury or two disappointing players to ruin all your leagues. Keep the faith where you can, and trade creatively where you can. Look at last week’s buy-lows, TY Hilton and Chris Givens. Trich is a player to go get now! His owner might be just as worried and do some sort of one for one swap, or give up a bit more if need be. You won’t get for sures in a Wilson trade, the main way out, if you feel you need to get out of Wilson, is to go after another risk, as that risk will be buy-low.

Would you trade CAM for D. Wilson?

I plan on QB streaming (Manuel, Pryor, Rivers) afterwards.

If you need a RB, it’s not a bad move. It’s risky, but if Rivers can continue to play well, you may hand yourself more points if Wilson works out.

There are always creative trades to make, don’t give up, grab those next few players that have had slow starts. Lacy is a good buy low in redraft only. Gio Bernard, Bernard Pierce, if you feel you are already on a path that won’t have you in the playoff hunt, you might as well make some bold moves, but DO NOT sell so low you are even more upset should Wilson rebound… get creative, run your trades by the “pinned” Creative Trading thread on the forums!

I still have Wilson, miller, and spiller as my 1-2-3 rbs and flex. I am 1-1 in my league now and barely won this week in both dynasty leagues. Guys, if you want to trade like smitty is optioning, go ahead. But you should hold on theses guys. Smitty talks about Martin last year. I see the same thing with these guys. I watched Wilson run, and he is so elusive. He’s holding tight on the ball and will break out of this slump.

Love reading your work. Solid stuff!

    I have a trade question,
    I am in a 12 team, redraft, non-ppr league that starts 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, K, DEF. All TD’s 6pts.

I have both Cook and Julius Thomas at TE.

My WR’s: Julio, Britt, E.Sanders, Hopkins, Harvin

I have been in trade talks with another manager who owns both TY and Givens. I offered Julius for TY, and he said no. However, he said he’d trade Givens for Julius.

Should I pull the trigger and get Givens, or would it be bad to invest that much into the Rams passing game (starting both Cook & Givens)?

    Thanks!

I think since they play different positions, both Cook and Givens can have good games together. With Cook at TE, I say yeah, get Givens in that line-up.

Yeah, not happy about Newt’s slow start, but he did this last year, and many panicked big-time! Those that panicked got burned, as they owned him during the slump, and didn’t own him during his explosion. Would I trade him? Sure, but depends on what you can get. Let’s say you have a Mike Vick on the bench, sure, go get a David Wilson, or Lamar Miller, or use Cam in some sort of trade to land the slow-starting Trent Richardson. All are good ideas, but only if your back-up plan at QB is sound. Overall, I am not panicking yet on Cam, no way.

    RB’s chris johnson,lamar miller,monte ball,shane vereen,bryce brown, and pierce
    WR’s dez,ty hilton,gordon,kenny britt, kenny stills, C patterson
    TE jared cook
…last week i noticed givens was on this guys bench alarm bells went of for me and i threw all kinds of trades at him before week 2 kicked off because for some reason he thought jerome simpson and nate burleson were better options lol. he declined a bunch and sent me a tarde offer for givens for ball and i declined. would u do that trade with my roster ?… after givens had a good game im not sure if he would do it now but its worth a shot….. i think ball if he gets starting carries he can explode and i would hate to see that happen what do u think.
I also feel like this other guy in the league is giving up on david wilson… with what i have what would u use in trades for givens or wilson ? thanks a lot smitty

cuse22, I would have taken that Givens trade last week, as I love both (both are on my Upside Board), but Ball’s situation is a lot worse than Givens’… well, Givens’ situation isn’t bad at all, but the cat might be out of the bag now. As for Wilson, yes, go after him if the price is right. No question. Same with TRich (maybe a CJ2K and CPatterson? Only if it’s not a return yardage format, though). TY Hilton and Givens were some of the best buy-lows in fantasy last week. It’s hard to imagine them being cheap this week. TRich, Lamar Miller (if the price is right), Demaryius Thomas, all great options to target. Lacy as well if the price is right, as he is banged up, but should return as the team’s starter. I question his long-term value, always have, but his short term value, meaning this year, is solid… Gio was another perfect buy low this week, but that cat is out of the bag as well.

So I have a 12 team 30 player dynasty league. My team is pretty deep in all positions except TE. What should I do here:

TEs: Fred Davis, Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen, Rob Housler
Potential pickups: Charles Clay, Travis Kelce, Zach Ertz, Jordan Reed, Garrett Graham

Other potential drops: Justin Hunter, Denard Robinson

Or I could try trading, but I’m pretty happy with my depth and my starters. I’ll list my starters if you suggest it.

RB – McCoy, Lynch, Miller, Bernard, Mathews, A.Brown, Lattimore, Robinson
WR – A.Johnson, Cruz, D.Jackson, T.Smith, Nicks, Michael Floyd, Woods, Stills, Britt, J.Hunter

      Format is 1QB, 1RB, 2WR, 2R/W/T, 1TE, 1K, 4IDP, Standard Scoring

Those TEs are ok, but yes, maybe attempt to land a Cook coming off a bad week. Not sure he will be cheap, definitely run the offers by the forum group, or post it here… I would look to upgrade at WR using some of that depth… and try to grab Bryce Brown on the cheap. I know some may disagree, but I sell-high on Desean Jackson. Not that he won’t continue to shine, heck i have him for 90 or so and a TD this week on the projections, but maybe buy a Demaryius Thomas on the cheap. Andre Johnson can’t be sold off all banged up, so don’t sell low there. Nicks is a decent sell high, but honestly, you have a solid team, one I wouldn’t touch much unless you’re using depth to upgrade starters. Nice team!

Seriously debating dropping Davis for Clay, Ertz or Reed though. Thoughts? It just looks like RG3 is connecting more with Reed and undoubtedly targeting him more. Even though Davis is the starter, it seems like RG3 doesn’t trust him a whole lot. Things may change, but I’m thinking Reed is going to destroy any value Moss and Davis had.

    12-Team Redraft 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 R/W/T, 1TE, 1K, 1 D/ST

    My Current Lineup:

    QB: Romo
RB: Miller, Lacy, Starks, Ball, Pierce, Vereen
WR: Green, Ju.Jones, Gordon, Marlon & Antonio Brown
    TE: Cook

I have been trying to acquire Richardson for a couple days. Here is his owner’s team:

    QB: Luck, Pryor
RB: Richardson, McFadden, Moreno, Mathews, B.Brown
    WR: A.Johnson, Edelman, Amendola, Jeffery
    TE: Witten, Gates

The only thing he would agree to is: Green & Miller for Richardson.

I said that I’d be giving up too much & countered with Green & Miller for Richardson & Johnson.

He came back with Green & Miller for Richardson & Jeffery.

That is where we are now…

I just can’t see giving up Green without getting Andre in return &, so far, he is unwilling to compromise.

I have left this deal alone for now. But is it worth pursuing? (This guy just traded Brandon Marshall for McFadden & Edelman???) …so I definitely think he’s hurting at WR. I’m just trying to buy TRich LOW, not with AJ freakin’ Green, lol.

    Thoughts DC Nation?

    Thanks

AJ Green is not buying low, my friend.. You’d be paying top dollar. I wouldn’t do that straight up right now. Not because TRich can’t be a top 5RB still, but because trade markets suggest TRich is well below AJG. Walk away from these trade talks and dont trade AjG or Julio. If he won’t take a Lacy and Gordon, or something reasonable, walk away.

I was just offered Miller for David Wilson in a redraft ppr. Is this a new brainier? Wilson is clearly the missing ingredient in the Giants offense and it’s imperative that he get going if their gonna win. Thoughts

Things could change directions fast for either of these guys, but I go with Miller for now!

Which player would you rather have off waivers?
    1. Hopkins or Royal?
    2. Hopkins or Gordon?

    Thanks.

      1. Coin toss here, as Royal is hard to not respect, but will Hopkins have up and downs as a rook or is he ready now (and is AJ going to stay/get healthy)? All three are real close. Gordon probably at no 2 but honestly it would and will be different each week.

What’s your take on RGIII? Looks like he’s afraid of running and looks slow out there.

    Thanks.

He is doing quite fine from a fantasy perspective, but give him some time, the dude rushed back no doubt, but he will get better and is doing well.

Depends on who is available, but honestly, past the top 4-5, matchups are the way to go.

It’s close. I think I like Edelman for now, as crazy as that sounds, but will he stay healthy? Close call. Take that to the forums for sure!

I have both Givens and Austin along with AJ Green and Ruben Randle in a 14 team non ppr. My running backs are Richardson, Miller, Ball, & Pierce.

Would you trade Austin for David Wilson? Or should I try to get someone else?

League is very savy. Hilton owner will not trade him.

    Hey Smitty,
Dynasty League – Fred Davis, Jordan Reed, Zach Ertz, or Travis Kelce

    Pick two.

I thought this is a good deal, just wanted to make sure I dont make a huge mistake (Wilson in the doghouse, Bell nice prospect …..). Thanks for your help Smitty, I will accept the trade.

Bell is a nice prospect, but David Wilson still has upside that is in the high-end RB2 variety. Could he fumble away his shot this year? Sure, know that, but still, this is the definition of buying low.

Hey Smitty, thanks for your insight as always.

I have a follow up trade question. I was able to land Givens for Julius Thomas (my starter is Cook).

Now I have been offered Larry Fitzgerald, and I give away Gio Bernard & Givens.

Since I play in a league where we start 3 WR’s; should I make that swap, or should I trade a different WR on my team?

This is a 12 team, non-ppr, redraft league where all TD’s are worth 6pts. Standard scoring.

    We start 1 QB, 2 RB’s, 3 WR’s, 1 TE, K, D/ST

    My roster:

    QB: Brady
RB: Trent Richardson, Lamar Miller, Moreno, Bernard, Ball, McGahee
WR: Julio, Givens, D.Hopkins, E.Sanders, Britt, Harvin
    TE: Cook

    Thank You!

    Smitty,
    James Jones & Jimmy Graham
    Vs.
    Victor Cruz & Jason Witten
    In a standard league

    Thoughts?
    Thanks and regards from Germany,
    Dieter
