The Walking Dead: Last Week's Episode *spoilers*

Couldn't find swampies' thread on my mobile, but I wanted to see y'all's opinions on the last few episodes.

Starting 2 episodes ago, I have been very intrigued by the governor- aka Brian's- apparent change of heart. I wasn't sold on him changing, but I thought it was very interesting because it made him a more complex character. It's easy to hate him if he's all bad, but they introduced his caring side. He is ultimately a protector who has been driven to insanity by the loss of the things that any dad holds most dear. Not excusing his actions, but that is a much more interesting character than "just another bad guy". I'm really impressed with the character development of the governor in the last two episodes, but of course it all came crashing back to reality in the episode last Sunday. This was my face when THAT THING happened on the roof of the RV " :O ".
What I don't understand is how -to my understanding- the reason that the gov went ape shit on Martinez was because either
    1. Martinez mentioned the possibility of not being able to keep the gov and his new family safe and that scared the gov. If this is the case, the gov is just totally insane because that was a COMPLETE overreaction!
    Or 2.
Martinez said that maybe he could "share the crown a little bit" with the gov, and that freaked the governor out. I could've sworn that the gov was yelling things like " I don't want it" while going all ballistic, which would imply that he knew that he couldn't/shouldn't ever have that kind of control over people again. But so why did he kill the temporary leader for power?? Did he snap after seeing that camp be slaughtered? And I thought it was interesting that they showed that he tried to run at first before gearing up for war. Running was never an option to the old governor, he was all aggression all the time. But in this case he tried to take his new family and flee but it seems like the world just didn't want it to happen that way. Anyway, I really enjoyed the last two episodes and wanted to share my thoughts and questions about it, feel free to share yours below!
