Roger Goodell Says NFL Would Consider Allowing Medical Marijuana for Concussions

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell continues to suggest medical marijuana could eventually be considered legal treatment for the league's players, including those dealing with concussions.

Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal reports Goodell wants to see more information based on testing from medical experts before making a decision about medical marijuana, but he definitely isn't eliminating it as a potential option:

Goodell says if medical experts ever say medical marijuna would help with concussions then would consider allowing it.
    8:40 AM - 23 Jan 2014

Goodell said he could envision a time when players use medical marijuana to treat pain in states where it is legal: "I don't know what's going to develop as far as the next opportunity for medicine to evolve and to help either deal with pain or help deal with injuries," Goodell said, "but we will continue to support the evolution of medicine."

"I'm not a medical expert. We will obviously follow signs. We will follow medicine and if they determine this could be a proper usage in any context, we will consider that," Goodell said.

Marijuana has been a popular talking point ahead of the Super Bowl because the two teams, the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos, come from states where voters decided to legalize it recreationally.

HBO's 'Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel' added fuel to the blaze on Tuesday when it revealed a study that claimed 50 to 60 percent of the NFL's players regularly use marijuana.

What do you guys think? P.S. Davone Bess would love this move

If they do them half the league will have a fake prescription for it. This is the dumbest thing I've heard today esp from someone so adamant on substance abuse in his league

LOL..... no kidding.  However, it has no business being used in professional sports IMO.

RB Lamar Miller, Shane Vereen, Zac Stacy, Cierre Wood
WR AJ Green, Julio Jones, Josh Gordon, Andre Johnson, Rueben Randle, Kenny Stills
TE J Reed, M. Bennett, Delanie Walker
    DEF Kansas City, Cleveland
    K Steven Hauschka

(I'm not a expert but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!)

I think organic substances shouldn't fall into the same category as synthetic or produced ones. There is production involved for cocaine, opioids, methamphetamines etc., multiple 'ingredients' combined chemically to create a drug. Marijuana is grown, dried, rolled and smoked. It wasn't that long ago that alcohol was bad; an illegal substance. I for one use it medically albeit without a prescription, making it difficult and expensive to obtain, let alone risky.

85% of those players have used it at one time likely. It's the addictive substances that bleed bank accounts, lives and relationships that need to be addressed.
    my team

RB Charles, CJ Spiller, D. Williams, Hillman
    WR Cruz, K.Thompkins, Antonio.Brown, J.Gordon, Wayne
    TE Cameron, Eiffert
    K Hauschka, Baronas

And we think there are a lot of concussions now. If this happens, I bet the concussion rate will skyrocket as well as the recovery rate....treatment factor!!! Lol!

Well, like alcohol, I don't see the issue with pot since it could hardly be termed a "performance enhancer"... The only issue has really been that it is... Well ... Illegal.

But now that that is changing? I really think it should just be off the list entirely...

Illegal drugs don't have a place in professional sports IMO, period.  There are many banned drugs in professional sports that are not "performance enhancing". Marijuana is only legal in certain states when prescribed by a doctor.  That's not even close to it becoming a legal drug.

It's on it's way... When you have the President of the United States going on record saying pot isn't any worse than alcohol? I think the writing is on the wall.

I'm not suggesting it should be taken off the banned list until it IS legal in the entire country, just to clarify. At that point it should be treated the same as alcohol.

And by the way it is now legal for recreational use in Colorado, not just for medical purposes..
