carpenter ants

Anyone have any experience with these guys? Is freezing here in Wisconsin and I've been noticing a few ants here n there around a crappy window/sink.

Today there's tons outside and inside the window, most with big wings. From the little research I just did they're carpenter ants and I shouldn't just kill or spray them as the queen will then freak and make tons more, possibly make a split colony even.

Just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with these pests?

good luck....am pretty experienced with roaches and bedbugs but haven't had many carpenter ant problems at the properties.  When we do pest control usually baits

get some Revenge liquid bait.  use the small pads that come with it and keep re-filling letting them eat.  You have to let them keep coming and getting the bait for a couple days.  If you leave the lights off they will pile on and swarm the bait.  Some will feed for a bit but the majority of them will keep bringing the bait back to feed the queen and the colony.  This will take them all out over a relatively short period of time.  1 week of baiting or so should do it.

I have been through it a couple of times at my place. Every couple of years I get some trying to establish a nest.  Around an old sink makes sense since they will tend to look for wet damaged wood if they are going to try and nest.  They prefer not to work too hard chewing through good wood so they stick to softer and old/damaged/weak wood.

@LukeB5301 I'm here to save the day! I do high end carpentry in Northern NJ and we work on mostly 19th century houses and come across a lot of carpenter ants and the damage they do. We use a product that you can buy called bora care! Which is boric acid that you water down in a mix. You put this mix into a spray bottle and spray and saturate where you see any ant trails. This will kill the carpenter ants for good!

The Revenge product I mention is exactly that, Boric acid bait so that they feed and take it back to the colony.  There is quite a few products with similar ingredients.  After trying many different forms I strongly suggest sticking to the liquid or gel and be sure to stay clear of it to let them feel comfortable feeding at it.  I get them in my kitchen cabinets so I just clear them out, put bait down and close the door.  Make sure its baited at night and refill as it gets empty.  Its the only way to fix the problem by getting them to bring enough back to the queen and take her out.

Trust me I've considered it. It's just a trailer I bought when i was 19, but a decent one. Were planning on buying a house but decided to wait until after we get married next year. Sometimes I wish we didn't wait lol

Intrest rates are stupid low right now, it almost criminal.  Forking out money for the right house is easier said than done though.  I thought I read yesterday it was like 2.8% that is insane.  I thought I was lucky at 3.5%

There's going to be another housing crash anyway....the "recovery" is manufactured by low interest rates and investors.  It's not a true recovery.

Take your time Luke, buy when ready, and buy with an intention of staying for a long time.  Don't put down more than 5% either in case you have to run away lol.

Another vote for the liquid traps. You may have to refill/replace them multiple times however the end result is normally annihilation of the colony. Good luck.
