Capitalizing on Talent

Reading these threads over the last few days, I've seen a lot of people say very similar things (paraphrasing):

"don't make the trade as you're giving up the best player in the deal"
    "I would never trade Martin"
"I would need an elite TE and a top 5 HB to trade Spiller"
"David Wilson has elite tools, so I wouldn't consider trading him at this point"

Basically, the general trend seems to be that if you have a player that is very very good, with a potential ceiling of being elite, they aren't worth trading and you should work a deal with other players on your team instead?  Why?  Why are people hesitant to trade a player that may never reach elite status, but yet are receiving elite compensation in return?

everyone & everything has a price.  -its what owners look for when they can get 2 or possibly 3 starters in return & when a team is a guy away but has depth on the bench to get a elite player.  its what fantasy football is about

Everyone has there own styles and peoples advise reflects that style. Some people like to sit on young talent and develop it while others like to sell high as soon as they can. Both can work.

Number of teams in the league dictates a lot here.  In a 10 team, you are more likely to hold onto a stud because you can get talent on the waiver wire regularly.  Larger leagues are where it make more sense to liquidate a higher ranked player to improve multiple starting positions depending on team needs and what not.
    TEAM 1 - Dynasty PPR, start 1 QB / 2 RB / 2 WR / 1 TE / 1 FX
    QB - Brees/Luck
    RB - Lynch(Michael,Turbin)/Stacy/Martin/Spiller
    WR - Megatron/Julio/Dez/Keenan/Rueben/Cordarelle
    TE - Graham/Julius

Every situation is different.  I remember hearing advice after Foster blew up in early 2010 to move him for Steven Jackson or Michael Turner if you could.  On the other hand, I moved Foster last year for TRich, Spiller, and Decker.  So Foster was 'untradeable' in one moment, and very 'tradeable' in another.

Some guys are 'untradeable' simply because you won't get full value for their talent.  Kind of goes along with the saying 'never sell low in dynasty.'  I've had plenty of people making what I perceive as low-ball offers for Ryan Mathews in a league where I have him.  I've told them all that as far as Mathews is concerned, I'm going down with the ship.  If he never works out, so be it.

Maybe if you can give an example we can discuss it and try to get to the bottom of what you are perceiving to be a trend of bad advice.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the advice being given is bad.  Just different from my personal perspective.  Not calling anyone out, just wanted to spark discussion is all.

I just think the quotes you mentioned were personal opinions and reflects how people plan and strategize differently in FF. There is no one right way to play the game, and thats the beauty of it to me. Some people would rather hold and be wrong then to trade and be wrong, and some the other way around.

Plus this is the offseason right now. Technically every player's value is speculative right now. Alot of people don't want make drastic moves or trade studs when they don't have to. When we're midseason and each person knows where their team is headed and what they need to do to make a championship run, alot of peoples tunes will change based on idividual situations.

    2014 predictions

(3/16) Toby Gerhart will have 1400 total yards and 8TDs
(3/16) Cobb will outscore Allen in PPR

IDK branch i think the offseason is the time to build up ones team rather than midseason. usually u get bent over the barrel for a particular need LOL..and if played correct you can draft a future stud. I think those that put in the time to study college players will have a harder time trading them than those  who draft according to rankings for the most part.

I dont disagree with you at all. That wasn't necessarily my personal view, just my opinion on how some players plan and strategize. Just saying alot of those people that say they will never trade someone will end up changing their tune during the season.

I had Brees and said I would never let him go because I felt like I needed him to win. But then when my team was on the verge of missing the playoffs with a bunch of older players i happened to get the chance to pick up R. Wilson up from waivers and did it. Had him for 2 weeks and realized he was definitely the real deal and found Brees to be expendable after saying I'd never trade him and locked up Spiller because of it. Now I feel like I have the team going in the right direction now instead of going straight down like it was, so i think the season really can dictate what a player is willing to give up. But also its all about the person as it was said earlier.
