FRESH ryan mathews thread

I've posted about him before and a decent conversation was started but how do people feel about him now that the chargers drafted ZERO rbs when they were in position NUMEROUS times to add competition? this bodes well for Mathews to at least have one more chance to be the guy...has shown flashes but we all know its about him staying healthy...numerous players have had injury prone starts to careers then taken off...discuss

In a conference call with season-ticket holders, Chargers GM Tom Telesco
called Ryan Mathews a "playmaker" and said he expects "big things" from the
    fourth-year running back.

The new Chargers regime has shown nothing but support for
Mathews, but beggars can't be choosers. Telesco inherited one of the NFL's least
talented rosters. He called Mathews a "great kid" who "works extremely hard,"
and said the Colts would "game plan around" Mathews when Telesco worked in
Indy's front office. At the Combine, Telesco went so far as to suggest
injury-prone Mathews would be San Diego's 2013 "bellcow" runner. The only
notable backfield addition has been passing-down specialist Danny Woodhead,
giving Mathews perhaps his final opportunity to prove himself an NFL lead back.

So you bomb me for being high on guys with great upside that have yet to prove to be injury prone disappointments but you are high on a RB that has done just that? I think he will have a broken collar bone by week 3.

An RB is only as good as his line - his upside is high RB 2.  His upside does not beat out the cost to obtain him IMO.

your smart enough to the know the difference jr...its called price tag...Mathews can be had in the same price range as vic ballard and rashard mendenhall...Wilson?...dudes going in the 2nd round of some drafts...EVERYONE can be had for the right price...on are own beloved site david Wilson is ranked #8 amongst rbs and Mathews is ranked #27...all im saying is at that price are people buying? LOOK OUT BELOW :D

I feel the exact same way...but Mathews is going quite a bit behind McFadden also

fluker helps but I agree...you think the cost which is 5th or 6th round is too much huh?

For good reason...His collar bones are made of glass and his talent is limited.

shouldn't his collar bones be all metal by now and really really strong?...its all about opportunity anymore though and it appears he is gonna get all he can handle....does ballard have more talent then Mathews?...what about morris?...im not really advocating Mathews too hard though...he's just a hard one to put a value on for me...even with my fantasy arrogance...lol

I guess he was ok in 2011 but I dont trust him. In a draft Id rather go WR in the 6th than him.

he's been given the chance 3 times and 1 of those times had 1500 plus yards so to say he has failed EVERY time is simply untrue JR....

I agree with what you're saying FFH ... about value.  If he falls to me, or is a throw in on a trade, I'd buy .... but I'm not paying high premium for him.  I'd honestly want him as nothing more than a RB4 if I had him, and the minute he started putting up stats I'd trade him

Negatives - Injury prone, fumble prone, bad O line, bad offense, poor performance last year.
Positives - Talented, good performance 2011, young.

That O line didn't get much better, and that offense didn't get much better.  I expect him to have an OK year, probably 16-18th best RB.  That upside puts his price in the late fifth, early sixth range imo.

even at rb3 if you draft rb-rb-wr-wr-qb seems okay to me...and at this point the Mathews hate is so strong nobody is paying any high premium for him...thanks for correcting jr I posted that before your correction...I just love going at the top dog with facts...lol...luv u long time

cbssportsline take on it to throw in...

News: The Chargers official team website reports that general manager Tom Telesco said during a conference call with season ticket holders that he's a fan of running back Ryan Mathews. Telesco said Mathews is a great kid and works extremely hard. He liked Mathews when he with the Colts, and they game planned around him. The report says he expects "big things from the running back" this year.

Analysis: The jury remains out on Mathews and his Fantasy value for this season. He was a huge bust in 2012 and left a bad taste for a lot of Fantasy owners. Still, he's a starting running back for a team that should score points, and Mathews clearly has the backing of management and the new coaching staff. He should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option coming into the season, and he's worth drafting as early as Round 4 in the majority of leagues.

but the RM owners still want high premium .... so unless he's a throw in, I'll never own him in a 1:1 trade
