Below is a 2013 Fantasy Football Mock Draft (Redraft) that I just ripped through, and I drafted against the average rankings in the fantasy football industry, which you can all do right here! Because current ADP data, although useful, is still unreliable (and will be until mid-June), I thought it might be more constructive, analysis-wise, to draft against industry rankings; again, give mock drafting a try here. The draft I just cranked out was a redraft mock, it was based on a PPR scoring format, and the line-up requirements were assumed as: 1QB, 2RBs, 3WRs, 1Flex, 1DST and 1K.
I have to admit, this is by far the best redraft team I’ve assembled so far this off-season, and I acquired this team from the 1.12 draft slot. Take a look at the core of my team:
My Roster
AJ Green (1.12), Julio Jones (2.01), David Wilson (3.12), Lamar Miller (4.01), Robert Griffin III (5.12), Montee Ball (6.01), Le’Veon Bell (7.12), Josh Gordon (8.01), Jared Cook (9.12), Bernard Pierce (10.01)

Analysis
Now, I was shocked to have landed such a high-upside roster, regardless of the draft slot, but the live mock draft tool used, which we now offer free through our DraftWizard partnership, has a rather extensive list of industry rankings powering it (yes, DraftCalc’s rankings are included); so, this outcome does not appear too unfeasible. Granted, this was a redraft mock, so that explains why some rookies like Ball and Bell fell quite a bit, and it also explains why Robert Griffin III isn’t getting respected, but clearly the industry, overall, is doubting some of DraftCalc’s biggest 2013 breakout candidates… this is great news for all of us here at DC Nation! I would take this team into battle against any team I’ve assembled thus far in 2013, and that goes for mock drafts or real drafts.
It is no secret that the WR/WR Draft Approach is one of my favorites so far this off-season, and it’s draft results like this that continue to sell me on the concept. Green and Julio feel as solid as they come at the WR position, and that would still be the case if this was a non-PPR. Some think that my WR/WR Draft Strategy goes out the window if the league is a non-PPR league, but that’s not the case. If anything, going WR/WR can be even more beneficial in a non-PPR scoring format. For one, everything is relative, and while receivers become a tab bit less valuable in non-PPR formats, you can almost better predict how to draft against the trends in your draft if your league is non-PPR, meaning you can go Green and Julio in the first- and second-rounds without much resistance, and you can almost bet that entering rounds 3-4, more than half of your league, if not more, will start their wide receiver runs… and, this is when you are ready to start drafting running backs. So, if everyone is drafting running backs early (when you are drafting receivers), and then they are all drafting wide receivers in rounds 3-5 (when you are drafting running backs), you might find your 3rd- and 4th-rounds loaded with wide receivers, thus your league mates could go 10-15 picks in that range with only 25% of those selections being wide receivers. Think of it like changing lanes on the freeway, but changing them at the precise time… once a lane starts to get congested, you switch over to a lane that’s not very populated. When your league mates are getting in the wide receiver lane in rounds 3-4, it’s not a bad game plan to be in the very empty running back lane.
Conclusion
All in all, it’s hard to predict how any draft is going to go, non-PPR, or PPR… every league is different, and every group of drafters is different. What I do know is that all of us should be mock drafting early and often this off-season… get to know your own draft strengths, and get to know what positions you like at what rounds, because every year is different! Hey Smitty, I just finished a Mock Draft using the WR/WR strategy on slot 1. What do you think about it?
Your Team
1. Calvin Johnson (Det – WR)
2. Julio Jones (Atl – WR)
3. Chris Johnson (Ten – RB)
4. Matt Ryan (Atl – QB)
5. David Wilson (NYG – RB)
6. Stevie Johnson (Buf – WR)
7. Le’Veon Bell (Pit – RB)
8. Matthew Stafford (Det – QB)
9. Josh Gordon (Cle – WR)
10. Anquan Boldin (SF – WR)
11. Michael Vick (Phi – QB)
12. Cincinnati (Cin – DEF)
13. Isaiah Pead (StL – RB)
14. Dustin Keller (Mia – TE)
15. Billy Cundiff (SF – K)
I like it. I think if you land a Stafford or other later, that slot where you have Matt Ryan could be put to other use. I think if you don’t go one of the top dog passers this year, waiting further, like where you got Stafford, is the way to go. Nice work.
This is based on inaccurate ADP, I’m afraid. CJ2K never goes in the 3rd in money drafts, he’s 2.6, generally. Leveon Bell would be great in the 7th, but he goes in the 4th. David Wilson usually goes at end of the 3rd, start of the 4th. Gordon and TY Hilton go in rounds 7 and 8 every time. Other than these pipe dreams – great job, who wouldn’t love this team, though a wasted Matt Ryan there. I’ve tried several ADP sources, the only one that I really cared about though was when I looked at Masters link to a real Silver, and Bronze draft from 6-1, and 6-2. These people paid money and lemme tell you they draft wayyyyyy different. QBs don’t slide quite as far in real drafts, and everyone is petrified of not getting an RB when it’s real, and not just a “mock”. I inputted the ADP data onto my ranking, resorted and buddy it was ridiculously different. FYI, you cannot mock against ADP created under “mock” conditions or you’ll only mislead yourself into a panic come draft day.
I did a 10 team non-PPR. Drafted from the #3 spot which is my actual draft spot this year. Very happy with the results.
QB: RG3 (11th)
RB: Doug Martin (1st), Darren McFadden (4th), LaMar Miller (5th), Reggie Bush (6th), Rashard Mendenhall (9th), Latavius Murray (15th)
WR: Julio Jones (2nd), Demaryius Thomas (3rd), T.Y. Hilton (7th), Josh Gordon (8th), Kenny Britt (10th)
TE: Jared Cook (12th)
K: Matt Bryant (14th)
DEF: 49ers (13th)
That’s a great squad!
This is my favorite mock so far(from 10 spot)
12 Team, PPR.
Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex
QB – Griffin, Luck
RB – TRich, Wilson, Miller, Pierce, L. Murray

TE – Cook, Cameron
D/ST – Seahawks
K – Prater
I’d be very happy with this squad
It’s hard not to like that squad, nice work.

Nice work. Redraft I take it? I love your first three picks, but for future execusions of this strategy, I’d go RB in place of Cobb, and pair that back with Miller. Although, if Gore has another year left, you make out big time here, I just am not so sure about Gore. Nice work.
Redraft it was, that was the first real concern, after brees i was definitely looking for a RB, but options were similar to gore, and I saw cobb as a really great WR3.
It’s not wrong, it could turn out well (if this was a league that is), but that’s just my take.
How would miller, sproles, and Mathews ever drop that far? And round 15 on Blackmon? Really? By the way vereen goes in the 7th to 9 rounds now—not the 14th. This is just closing your eyes and fantasizing. Maybe free espn drafts against 6th graders will get a team like this, but no chance a pay league would….”
It was on a 10 team, ppr league on yahoo… could be the rest were 6th graders lol.. dont know them..
Hey, I’ve seen this kind of draft as well. Supervolcano, you’re right for the most part on some of those names, but every league is different. We all have had those leagues where there is no way you get all your sleepers, or at least many of them. Then, we have all had leagues where we get laughed at for even drafting some of these players that we couldn’t even steal in middle rounds in other leagues. Point is, that draft above isn’t nuts, but more often than not, ADPs usually are on the money. Problem is, ADP data irons out more later this month, so we don’t really know where everyone is getting drafted on average just yet (meaning, watch guys like Montee Ball zoom up to the 3rd or higher.
Dang good team, Smitty.
This is one of the first mocks I’ve seen this summer with two QBs going first round.
If you draft with the philosophy that your first few picks should be as reliable as possible in producing points, is it truly outlandish to take a QB in the first round this year, even with the lack of stud RBs?
Reason why I ask, I’m in a .5 ppr league that awards 6 pts for passing TDs. Tradition has it that QBs get drafted early and often. I am usually one to get an RB with my first pick, but after being burned the last two years in drafting Run DMC two years ago and then Shady McCoy last year in the first round, am toying with the idea of taking an A Rodgers or Brees, simply because there’s little to no risk there…you’re looking at likely 4,500 yards and around 40 tds.
There’s something to be said about having a stud RB, but having been burned by two studs, am I crazy to look for something with a bit less risk?
Let me set the record straight. There are no outlandish draft style when you’re talking about taking the highest scoring players (like Rodgers, Cam, etc) in the first. Would I do it? No. Can you get one of those two in the 2nd round 8 times out of 10, or 9 times out of 10? Sure. But, honestly, I think if you’re taking elite players, even if you snag a Rodgers early, you can build a winning team. Again, would I do it? No way, not in the first, but I wouldn’t hesitate in the 2nd, and I get all kinds of laughs when I draft Rodgers or Cam in the 2nd/early 3rd, with comments like “why take a QB there when you can get Wilson in the 4th or 5th?”
I scratch my head, honestly.
Rodgers (2nd)
Lamar Miller (4th)
vs.
Matt Forte (2nd)
Russell Wilson (4th)
… even if we take a first round running back, like a Marshawn Lynch, can one honestly say something, at least something like ‘why would you’ when you’re talking Rodgers/Miller for even Lynch/Wilson?
I’m not suggesting this of you (or of Supervolcano, just in general), but that’s just crazy. Crazy to call that thinking “reaching”. There are all kinds of ways to win, and even the guy that takes Rodgers at 10 overall can win, it’s all about landing that player in the round you would have grabbed your QB. Like:
Rodgers (No. 10 overall)
Nicks (4th or 5th)
vs.
Dez Bryant (10th overall)
Russell Wilson (4th or 5th)
Again, is that person crazy with Rodgers? No way. Not my style, too early due to ADPs, sure, but crazy, no way. Brady in round 1 would be, only because his ADP is just way, way off from first round value. That’s the difference.
Yes that is crazy. No risk, no reward applies here. There’s only a 3 to 5 point diff ppg between the #1 and #12 QBs. You can get the 10th, 11th, 12th best projected qbs in the 8th or 9th round. QB is the steak on the scoring menu, true, but there is an abundance of steak now and you don’t have to pay top dollar for it.
Hey Smitty. Keep up the excellent work brother.
Here is my favorite redraft team by far. 10 man- standard scoring.
#8 Spot
QB- Cam Newton
RB- Spiller
RB- T. Richardson
WR- Dez Bryant
WR- Antonio Brown
TE- Gronk
Flex- Montee Ball
Bench; Levon Bell, James Jones, Shane Vereen, Deandre Hopkins, Bryce Brown, Denarius Moore
This team looks pretty unbeatable… too bad it was just a mock.
That’s one fine team!
I just completed an early redraft ppr masters league I was at 1.2 and against most people’s logic took megatron because I’m tired of loosing in the platforms to teams that have him…
12 team
Team ended up
1.2 megatron , gronk, Cobb, miller, gore, rgiii, Ty Hilton, pierce, Randolph ( ins if gronk can’t doit), vareen, then n no order Dobson l Murray cutler d Robinson thanks smitty ..
Nice work. Not a big fan of Cobb as a third drafted player, i mean i like him, but you more than made up for that with some other great picks. Great job, interesting look of a team for sure. Keep on mocking using our mock tool: https://draftcalc.com/fantasy-football-mock-drafts/
