Devonta Freeman or Tre Mason?

I'll take Freeman.  Playing against SF, Seattle and Arizona defenses 6 times per year tilts the scale.

So who they play against is now deciding who to attain? Didn't Stevie Johnson consistently  burn Revis every time they played? Lynch fared well against the stout 49ers D.

Opponents or not, I like Mason more, he's just more well rounded.

More well rounded or not is an opinion and the jury is still out.  However, there are several things that are facts.  They are:

    - Zac Stacy isn't going anywhere and at the very least even if Mason claims the job towards the end of the season, Stacy will still handle short yardage and goal line carries.
    - Freeman really doesn't have any competition for carries once SJax goes (very shortly).
    - Freeman is a better pass blocker.
    - Yes, who they play 6 times per year.  Seattle, SF and Arizona are all top defenses.  That still matters.  It matters even more when using it as a tie breaker between two similar players.  When Mason goes to Seattle and Freeman goes to New Orleans, there will be numerous- and rightfully so- number WDIS questions revolving around benching Mason...not benching Freeman.

Taking into consideration what we do know, why would anyone want to take the risk on the one thing that the jury is still out on?

I think the jury would be out moreso on Freeman and his ability to be the guy after Jackson. Many of us here thought it would be Quiz and we were wrong. Cause he can't catch a cold out of the back field. Yes he can pass block, but that can be taught to any rookie. Let's face its pass blocking is a weak argument considering its what benched Monte Ball for a good part of last year. Now Ball is the clear starter. Improvements can always be made. Teams like the 4ers and Zona will not be the iron curtain for the next 5 years. Teams just don't last that long anymore. Plus the Saints, they're a pretty good improving D so I can't really knock them anymore.

I'm not knocking the Saints D, but in comparison to Seattle's they don't even register.  Who would you rather go up against Seattle D or Saint D?  You are right, improvements can be made.  Montee Ball learned to pass block.  It's a good thing that Freeman was the consensus #2 pass blocking rookie HB behind Charles Sims.  As far as catching passes out of the backfield, Freeman is as smooth as silk.  I see a lot of Andre Ellington in Freeman.

NO is still weak against the run. They excelled defending against the pass.

Seattle allowed the fewest passing yards last year, NO was #2.

NO is a D-Line and a little depth away from SEA.

Which is a crap ton! U can't just find or put together a great D-line, which may be the most important part of the D, overnight. Also, getting and keeping quality depth isn't easy either. I'm not here to say the Saints D is poop, but they're no Seattle.

BD, my comment was directed to TBCF. I guess I should've deleted your part of the quote.

I'm the first one to say Mason is an unproven pass blocker and one of the reasons I was down on him before the draft.  From what I see and hear in OTA Freeman is a terrible pass blocker and it is an issue.  Hard to hype him up taking advantage of throwing game if they don't trust him in there when they throw.  I'm with BMX on this they will get a better big back next year and then Freeman will fall behind this new guy.  Only way ATL can use Freeman is if they send him out every pass play and their OLine isn't that good.
Rams OLine is going to surprise.  I can't wait to watch them handle the division. :)

Almost every rookie RB comes out of college not knowing how to pass block in the pro system. 2 completely different games these days. Very few college teams use pro style systems.

no worries man i was stating i dont think there equal and making sure you guys understood i wasnt comparing those two defs..Seattle is the cream of the crop but at some point all those nned paid and it will start to break down was my reasoning..the 49ers are getting a little long in the tooth along with some majors injuries. they started a decline last year imo. cards are good but lost alot in the middle with dansby and washington..

So NO isn't going to decline with age, but all others will?  I know that isn't what you mean, but that is how it comes across.  Plus, Seattle has the 4th YOUNGEST starters on defense, so I'm not sure your point holds much water.  http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/100354/average-age-rankings-for-projected-starters

There is a lot of exaggeration in this post.  Where's your link that Freeman is a "terrible pass blocker"?  One blurb from a HB coach that says he needs to work on it, doesn't really mean that he is a "terrible" pass block and that's an issue.  If Freeman needs work on his pass blocking and he was the consensus #2 best best blocker coming out of college, then just imagine where everyone else is.  Should probably keep this to fact and leave exaggeration and bias at the door as it would lead to a better discussion.

i believe DV that Rob will be given the chance to bring in players he wants for the type of def he runs never was the case in Big D..seattle maybe young and they are but at some point all those good players will want to be paid like studs but hey i see your point of view and i could be wrong for sure.. but seattle been the top def year in and year out for the next 5 or 10 years no i dont see that..

Saints d isnt good on the road. I think byrd is very over rated. Bills pass defense has always been bad with him at safety.

Panthers lost good players on defense. I see the whole team regressing back to what they were two years ago
