DC: Trade Calc eliminated due to 2013 Rankings Upgrades

Due to the major 2013 Rankings/Cheat Sheet upgrades, we have decided to retire the Player Trade Calc. We still have the Draft Pick Calc, though.

Why you ask? Well first off, know that we wouldn't have done this if our new rankings didn't do the job of the Trade Calc already... our new rankings provide year-round auction values, and essentially, these are way more accurate and will be updated MUCH MORE frequently than the Trade Calc. Yes, it's harder to add up multiple trade values when doing those 2 for 2s, but look at the benefits of the new Player Trade Chart that our Rankings have really now become:

You can do way more than 1-for-1 and 2-for-2 evals
You can actually see what player values are close to the players you're looking up, and it makes it easier to generate trade ideas.. the calc was really claustrophobic in this sense, as you really couldn't see too much from above... now you can take in more
Most important: Since one can accomplish the same type of evaluations, and more, using our Rankings, the time and effort spent on the Trade Calc can now be spent on writing and other content

Also: We monitor and track the traffic we get on each of our pages/features, and really, it wasn't a hard decision to shut the calc down given the calc's traffic is now flooding over to the rankings. I wouldn't go as far as to say the Calc wasn't popular, as we feel all of our content is popular, but when compared to our other features, beefing up our other content (with time we use to spend on the Calcs) is going to be the best long-term move for DC!

Anyway, I just wanted to address the change with you, provide the thinking, and hopefully your knee-jerk reaction to the calc being retired won't be so knee-jerk like after reading this.

I was never really a fan of them anyways.. I like using my own judgement and some advice on forums

All the trade Calc did was do the math for you....people simply Have to assign numerical Values to your rankings and do the math now.....wouldn't worry to much about the loss godfather

Good...Trade calcs usually do more harm then good. Better to evaluate a trade in discussion than strictly mathematically anyway. The forum is a far superior trade calculator then a trade calculator. If you still want to put a number to it just add up the rankings of the players in question and the side with the lower numbers wins the trade based on how most calcs work. Thats hardly ever a fact in the real world though as you all know. This wont affect the quality of this site in the slightest. Keep up the good work Smitty.

The trade calcs were just a small starting point in evaluating trades. By no means, were they the final say. Like mentioned above, the forums are the best place to get trades evaluated.

You still have your starting point via the rankings and the trade values listed.. It makes it easier to scan for trade ideas as well using the rankings IMO.

I understand Smitty... just one of the tools i liked here the most.sad to see it go..but on to bigger and better things.

Just saw this for the first time. For the record, the only reason I found DraftCalc was looking for a trade calculator. Didn't actually use the calculator much, but it is what brought me to the site initially.

Yeah, I imagine it makes a return eventually, Jessejanderson! Maybe next year.

ah but since you open draft calc now it's like a glue trap right? Once your here and try to leave they pull you right back in. It would be like betraying the godfather if you left after you just asked him for a favor.

I came to the site about 3 weeks into the season or something like that and saw Russell Wilson at #1 on the Upside Board.

Living in Seattle and passionate member of the 12th Man I kind of have a man-crush for Russell Wilson. I actually wrote-in drafted him because our draft board didn't have a sticker for him. I drafted him in the 10th round which was pretty risky since this was before he had even become the starter, I just believed and was worried that someone else would draft him as a homer pick (Matt Flynn had already been drafted). LOVING him as a keeper for this season.

Since Draft Calc was the only site that had the same belief in him that I did, I decided to stick around. Also ended up trading quickly to acquire A.J. Green and Dez Bryant and finished the reg season with most overall points but unfortunately lost out in playoffs.

I'm here for life now. ;)
