Awesome article Smitty. Now this is how its done people! In depth, precise rankings with a proper reasoning to back it up. Your work is second to no one big guy. Personally i'd swap Bernard and Ellington, but its all good.

Yes, junkie, you were driving the Ellington Express before I was here at DC, know that people!

Ellington has really grown on me over the last couple of months. IMO, he’s the one RB in this class that can take it to the house on any given play… However, I still like Ball and Bernard’s overall rounded skills more.
Stock up: Stacy – could have the quickest feet and change of direction of any RB in this class. Long speed is questionable. A solid 40 time at the combine will go a long way for Stacy.
Stock down: Taylor – I’ve soured on him lately. Not very dynamic.

Spot on with Randle’s analysis. I feel the same way… Has shown flashes but just doesn’t have that “it” factor. And for a “suppose” quick RB, he doesn’t make a ton of defenders miss.

I guess I'm not see the "it" in Ellington. Doesn't seem to have a great lower body, is willing to pass block, but doesn't do a good job of it. Has speed & balance, but Deon Sanders wouldn't be afraid to tackle this kid.

good point, small framed and not much lower body thickness, BUT, RB's like CJ2K, Charles, Ellington, etc. have top notch quickness that they rarely get hit squarely, meaning they don't take many big-time hits.

Charles.. Great small lower body example.

Great response. I went back to the NFL combine profile of Charles, and a lot of the same points could be made.

Agreed. There is a burst and quickness to him that the other backs don't have. It's like he is playing at an entirely different speed. It just stands out to me.

SI's Peter King considers Alabama's Eddie Lacy the only running back likely
to be taken in round one.

Lacy is the consensus top back in this year's class, but it's
possible no runner will go on day one. However, the 6-foot-0, 220-pound
battering ram should have RB-needy teams like Cincinnati, Green Bay and Atlanta
buzzing if he falls to the bottom third of the first round.

Maybe this becomes a positive thing for Ball, as he could fall to a good situation instead of forced into a bad one.

Due to Lacy's recent hamstring injury, Lacy moved to No. 4, Lattimore to No. 3 (and rising)... Lattimore is said to be way ahead of schedule.

I can't see Lacy being a workhorse anywhere anymore. He is injured way too much it seems like.

That and I just don't get how no one else is talking about his running style not looking anything like the running style of an elite NFL Rusher. Lynch is a player you can KIND OF compare him to, but Lynch still runs much like a stud rusher, low, hits the hole, etc, but watch Lacy film linked to the player page.

Yup, I've never been high on Lacy either. His style is a dying breed in the NFL.
I doubt he ever amounts to anything more than Marion Barber: goal line back who can come in to give the feature back a breather.
