Smitty, defend The Newt!

Read this article on NFL.com, and immediately thought what would Smitty say about this portion:

I don't believe Newton has what it takes to eradicate and/or mask areas of deficiency. I don't believe he is an elite, upper-echelon quarterback. The Panthers have finished under .500 in both of Newton's seasons as the quarterback. Cam can be dazzling and, at times, absolutely breathtaking. He also can be inconsistent protecting the ball and downright maddening with how he handles the "fifth quarter" responsibilities that come with being an NFL quarterback. Remember the press conference where he asked for the suggestion box? Franchise quarterbacks, team leaders don't do that. Newton rightly drew ire for performing his Superman routine when Carolina was losing big. Newton seemed aloof on the bench during losses, especially a 29-point, nationally televised defeat to the New York Giants on NFL Network. His teammates have yet to vote him a captain. That tells me something. Newton still needs to grow up. That's a problem.

When I look at the young group of quarterbacks, I don't put Newton in the category of Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson. He hasn't earned it. Luck and RG3 carried bad teams and were the epitome of clutch; the vets followed their lead. You don't see that happening with Newton in Carolina. Luck and RG3 would've put the flawed Panthers in the playoffs last year, just like they did with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins, respectively. The Panthers are 13-19 with Newton. Quarterbacks are judged by wins and losses. Going into Year 3, you can call Cam Newton electric, but you can't call him a winner.

I agree. I think Newton is a sell at his current value. Look at his passing numbers, and who he has to throw to. He just lost his OC. Once he starts running less...where is his production going to come from? Steve Smith will be gone and it doesn't look like they are in any hurry to stock up on WR talent. Don't know what they are doing in Carolina.

The Redskin's surrounded RG3 with Garcon, Josh Morgan, Alfred Morris, and Jordan Reed this year to help him out. The Seahawk's traded for Percy, drafted Chris Harper, and Christine Michael to help with Russell Wilson's development. The Colts drafted Ty Hilton, Fleener, and Allen to help out Luck. The Panthers have added zero talent for Cam. I am with Rick, I have NO idea what the Panthers are doing and that makes Cam a hold for me. I don't discount the talent, but the organization is a mess.

Can a cam owner get a Brandon Lloyd...Braylon Edwards....heck even a devery Henderson...Ramses Barden....something please

Now we clearly know where you stand on the matter.

All I care about is fantasy, and even on a losing team, which I don't necessarily agree that the team can't sneak into the playoffs and lose in the first round, but... Even on a losing team, Newt can be the no 1 fantasy scorer in the game. I'm not a doubter. Doubters last year, when he did struggle for a grip of games, looked foolish when they sold low and Cam went on a late fantasy tear.

Will he ever be a typical NFL QB? No, that's not his game , but the dude is a beast, he is still young and learning, and a team can go from bad to good in 1-2 drafts... Not to bring in Bball, but Michael Jordan didnt win championships for a while, but it's hard to remember that, isn't it? 2-3 years from now, it might be, im not saying it will be for sure, but it might be a foggy memory, all this doubting of Cam.

Give him a chance, he has done very well thus far. He keeps getting doubted, yet he could be the No. 1 scoring fantasy player in any format during any given season... best part is he is going in the 3rd and 4th rounds right now. Talk about almost zero risk.

Yea I was just taking a shot at him haha. Carolina just doesn't give him any help at wr. Not to mention, Cam's the leading rusher for your team. That's not a good sign.

Cam really did step it up last year in the second half of the season fantasy and reality; props to him.

have to agree with Smitty..Here for the fact that The panthers front office has done little to help him out from a wr/playmaker type player which he desperately needs.

Yeah I'm upset they haven't given him tools to work with. It's Steve Smith, a bunch of underachieving RB's and that's about it.
