dynasty

Would like to get into another dynasty league.. Just got into one last season and enjoying it so far, but have learned a lot. Wouldn't mind starting one just not sure if I fully understand them. (The keeping player part). League I am now we have a salary cap and we can sign players to multi year deals, but this seems like a lot of work for the commish. What are some ways that you can run a dynasty league? Keep your whole roster? or a set number or whatever else.

The way I like to do it is to have a startup draft of 25 players, drop 5 players after the season and have a 5 round rookie/FA draft after the NFL draft. Just make sure you drop the 5 players before the 5 round draft because if you dont the value of the drafts picks in the 3rd through 5th round decreases and the draft will be less active. And never make the draft rookie only. I was just recently in a couple of leagues where we either didnt drop the 5 players before we drafted or did a rookie only draft and both kind of sucked.

We are on year 7 of our league, where I am co-commish with my brother...we started as a straight dynasty (keep everyone) with 22 roster spots and 3 man taxi squad....well after a year we dumped the taxi squad and increased roster size to 25 (made it much simpler), also in the offseason we had a 4 round rookie/FA draft....well we have since evolved into a salary cap/contract league, with 30-man rosters, and a 4 round rookie-only draft in the offseason, and it's been amazing.

The league thrives (granted we have 12 good owners who all know each other and we can all trust...which is HUGE)....most leagues don't have 30-man rosters unless they include IDP (we have no IDP), but I have found that with 30 roster spots, there is plenty of room every year to draft 4 rookies and to stash those deep sleepers that make dynasty leagues so much fun. I never understood dynasty leagues with low roster limits, the whole point of dynasty is to be able to stash those prospects/deep sleepers/rookies and build a franchise...also, contracts and a salary cap is a lot of fun, it adds free agency to the offseason with teams bidding for players, it makes trading more fun (i.e. trade a stud with 1 year left who will be expensive to resign and you can't afford for prospects/draft picks/etc.), and we just implemented a great new rule in 2012 where your league fee is half of your team's salary (we have a $250 salary cap, so max you can pay is $125), it makes resigning players and bidding on players very interesting b/c you are essentially bidding real money...anyways, I'm rambling and could go on forever about this...in short here are my suggestions:

- pure dynasty (keep all players)
- salary cap/contracts --- takes years of tweaking to perfect it, we have made small changes to system for 3 straight offseasons...this will be 1st year we probably don't
- rookie-only or rookie/free agent draft
- high roster limits (min. 25, recommend 30...as long as it's a 12 team league)
- get good, committed owners!!

I'm partial to the setup like JR mentioned. 25 man roster, drop 4 or 5 prior to the draft and then do rookie/FA at that point. One of the interesting things I've found over the years and leagues is the waiver wire setup REALLY plays an important roll in how teams are constructed and maintained. In one league there are open ww from week 1 through week 10, no limit you just have to be on top of what's going on. Well that's worked well for me since I pay attention. Other leagues have 1 pick per week, totally different strategy, can't take a flyer and then dump if it doesn't work out. Ctown spoke on how his league started one way then morphed to something else, this is cool as long as the commish(s) communicate well and the owners are active. Otherwise it can turn into a hot mess quick.

Most importantly if the league is free then have fun and don't lose any friends from it.

What would be the best website to facilitate a league that has salary? Or do you have to keep track of everything manually? I run a redraft in ESPN. I'm in a dynasty league thru Yahoo, but the commish seems like he carries a big burden as he keeps track of all the salaries and draft picks and more thru spreadsheets. He is just making it harder than it has to be? Or is that really the only way that a league like that can be managed? I have never used flea flicker or mfl. Yes welcome to DC SM:) I'm in a non ppr keeper league where you have roster size of 19 guys and only can keep 9 before the draft. Basically the core of your starters on your team. It's a 12 owner 150 cookie league where trading is included in our package as to keep trading open all the time except for playoffs. It's makes a big difference knowing the guys in your league just so nothing get out of hand with trading. And i agree with rabid that the commish has to be on top of everyone with good communication or the league will fall apart. Guys being active is the key to having a league work well. We use Rtsports.com as our host for my league

If you don't have a salary cap and just do a set limit of you can keep this many players. Is there a limit on how long you can keep a guy? Or you can hold Calvin for 8 years if you wish or whatever number of years. Also with a rookie draft, how would you set their monetary value (if you have a salary cap in place). Is a salary cap used just to keep teams from holding all the great players for years and years? So glad I joined this site and forum... Good to find others out there that get excited over this stuff like I do, lol.

I dont do salary cap leagues but IMO a true dynasty does not have limitations on players or time limits you can keep them.

If you don't do contracts/salary cap then you can decide however long you want to keep players as the commish...if it's a straight dynasty, then you would ALWAYS have that player. Or if you go the keeper route, some leagues allow you to keep players for a specific number of years (I'm personally not a fan of this, I prefer either straight dynasty where you keep them as long as you want, or salary cap/contracts, where you can still keep them as long as you want, but you just have to be able to afford them)....in my salary league we have a set price for our rookie picks, it's actually very simple (i.e. 1.1 = $20, 1.2 = $18...3rd & 4th round picks are $1, etc, you can make it whatever you want)....

IMO salary cap & contract are designed to add another element of reality to fantasy football, and to try and allow some turnover of players. But I'll be honest, we try & keep it as close to realistic as possible, so basically there has never been an AP or Megatron as a free agent, b/c the owners who have those players always sign them to max contracts, which is similar to the NFL...we usually only have a handful of decent free agents every offseason, most guys are role players or sleepers that get signed in the offseason...i can go on and on...I can't stress how much fun a contact/salary league is, and I can't stress how much I dislike keeper leagues...IMO either do a redraft league, or pure dynasty(with or without salaries)....don't know if any of this makes sense or not, I keep rambling

that's what is great about a dynasty or a keeper league that does not have salary limits. That you get your guy and you keep him as long as you want. The guy who does his homework wins but that's why we are here at DC to do our homework.
