Early 2013 Sleeper Candidates

Ok, so it’s extremely early to be calling out absolute 2013 Fantasy Football Sleeper Candidates, however, when has that ever stopped us?

I venture to say that a handful of the names below will remain on my short list for next year’s 2013 Bold Predictions Article (which, last year predicted rises for C.J. Spiller, Russell Wilson, Dez Bryant, AJ Green, etc.), but know that things change fast, as will this list below.

So, on that note, let’s get to it!

C.J. Spiller

While C.J. Spiller is now all of the sudden everyone’s favorite breakout running back heading into 2013, he is still looking like bargain value outside of leagues consisting of DraftCalc users. Right now, Spiller’s ADP is right around 2.07. Now, let me first start off by saying that I doubt his ADP stays that low as we head into the months of June, July and August, but I still think Spiller heads into most 2013 drafts as a high-to-middle second-round target; that’s still a bargain. Why? Well, if you check out my 2013 Player Rankings, you will see Spiller ranked

smitty, question regarding the subscription…at season end will we be charged automatically for next season, or will we be asked to re-subscribe next season? Thanks a million and great stuff this site in unbelievable!

  3. Smitty says:

Thanks! It’s a one time purchase, so it’s not assumed reoccurring!

  4. Whos_Ur_Doggie says:

This is exactly what DC’ers were waiting for and once again, you delivered Smitty. It’s always nice picking your brain without having to pick it, lol.

    • Smitty says:

Thanks, bro. Things should and will change fast, but that doesn’t stop any of us from compiling our early breakout lists. I always find it funny when people say “it’s too early” or “how can you include rookies in your rankings already when the draft hasn’t happened”… why can’t you predict? Speaking of that, I think it’s about time to mix the rookies into the rankings :)

Fine piece of writing Smitty. Very informative and detailed. Very glad I own me some Spiller, I got you to thank for that!!!

  6. dh11482 says:

So is the subscription for one year or does it stop at the end of the season? Example…if I pay for it today on 2/11, will it be good until 2/11 of next year?

    Great write up Smitty!!

    Love it Smitty.

Gives me some guys to look at possibly buying low on if possible outside of DC leagues!

  10. Ballgame says:

I also love Spiller right now and think we are almost way too high on him over here at DC. Not too high because he isn’t as good as we think but because we will all expect him to go higher than he will end up going. So this is a good reminder we are higher on him as a whole here at DC. Again good article!

Smitty, stumbled on this gem of a fantasy football website last summer, and you convinced me to roll the dice and draft Dez Bryant as my #1 WR (Got him in the fifth round), and trade for Spiller mid season (which I did, and was huge down the stretch).

Great article here….would you also consider Ryan Mathews in your Sleepers Due to Doubters column, with the new coaching staff in SD, or you done with the R Mathews hype?

    Keep up the great work!

    • Smitty says:

Nice work, whansen1202! Knowing when to make the moves is nice work on your part as well!

No, not a big Mathews fan. He has a lot to prove before I trust in him, and I’m not so sure his ADP will be in the bargain range anyway. As a late flex, sure, I’d take him, but so far I’m seeing him go as high as the 5th, and there are just too many safer options in that range. I can’t fault anyone for thinking he has sleeper appeal, but I don’t see it myself – yet. Things change.

  13. swiftymcgee58 says:

i have spiller, charles, and murray in one of my leagues…this write up makes me giggle….ha, cant wait for them to produce (#fingerscrossed) like they should! Great stuff!

    • swiftymcgee58 says:

something to add to the Matthews debate, read somewhere (think rotoworld) that in Zona, they had the fewest rushing attempts in the league even with how TERRIBLE their QB situation was….Wisenhunt in SD, doesn’t look grand for Matthews right now…

    • Smitty says:

Mathews is all risk IMO, and until his ADP reflects it, I stay away. Thanks, bro! Keep up the solid commenting!

  14. whansen1202 says:

Another thing I was wondering….Smitty, do you think LeSean McCoy is a stud that could slip just a bit? In addition to McCoy having a sort of “down year” this past season, read yesterday that Philly might be doing a committee approach with McCoy and B Brown. Would hate to see McCoy end up in a Spiller like situation where his talent is underutilized. It’s clear when he’s on his game, McCoy is easily a top 3 RB.

    • Smitty says:

He could very well be underutilized, no question. He could also be very undervalued and he could end up going nuts. Honestly, if I had to predict, or explain my thinking now, I’d say this….

I think there is very little chance he loses enough touches to matter. In fact, he could stay healthy if he had a change of pace in there. Now, that being said, his concussion issues are a concern, and even though he won’t lose touches when on the field, because he is too good and Brown is too inexperienced, I think there is a decent chance he takes another big hit to the head… how will he respond? Will Brown be in the line-up due to injury? How many games will McCoy miss? Those are the things that concern me, not the thread of Brown. Brown is in a great spot, though, because of McCoy’s risk factor. Try to own Brown in all leagues where you don’t own McCoy, and absolutely own Brown in ALL leagues that you own McCoy in.

How is Forte a sleeper and a bust canidate? I guess you are covering all your bases on that guy.

    • Smitty says:

Well, keep in mind ADP changes. He can go from bust to sleeper with one update. Or, a guy can be a sleeper in any draft where people are sleeping on him, but he can turn bust candidate on ya if you take him high, or are forced to take him high. Forte’s ADP is all over the place, so it’s not about covering basis, it’s about taking into account all of the draft slots he can go in.

I define a sleeper as someone you can snag way, way below their potential ceiling value. Forte can be a top 5 overall player, plain and simple. He can. And, as an often 3rd and 4th round pick, that’s value!!! He can also bust. And, he can be more popular in some formats/leagues and require a second round pick. So, I really do think he is both, no question.

Also, not to mention I call him a Bust Candidate, as that’s what most are labeling him, but if you read above, my write up is more refuting it than agree with it, but I outline where the “line in the sand” is with Forte and where he could go Bust on ya.

Hope that answers your question a bit, but great observation and topic.
