Breakout Alert
I absolutely love the future potential of Ryan Mathews in that San Diego backfield. Mathews is now in line to receive the bulk of the carries in 2012, with former running back Mike Tolbert moving on to that mess of a running back situation over in Carolina. Mathews was the 12th pick in the first-round of the 2010 NFL Draft, but due to some nagging injuries, he has not been able to finish a full season of duty during his NFL career. However, last season Mathews posted four games with over 110 rushing yards, taking some big steps towards becoming an elite back in the NFL. His low number of touchdowns (6) might cause his draft stock to slip a little, but I’m predicting rushing stats of 290-1300-9TDs, with receiving stats of 45-400-2TDs.
Those numbers are solid and would make Mathews a top 5 fantasy back in 2012. On top of that, Mathews is one of the only backs to have sole possession of the starting job, and he will be doing it in Norv Turner’s run-heavy offense. I’m buying on Mathews in 2012, and I hope you don’t miss the boat, because next year he might become untouchable in all fantasy leagues.
I have Ryan in a dynasty league and i am excited with the breaout out year he could have, but with the amount of carries and injury history have me a bit worried! If he can stay healthy look out! he could put up some scary stats!
Smitty, given how high you are on Matthews and Murray, would you trade Megatron straight up for both of them? I have that offer on the table in my 1/2 PPR 22 person dynasty league.
Remember that’s not my write-up. I love Mathews, but for me, Calvin is still higher. It’s arguable, but I agree Mathews is in for a big-time season. Murray is about as high as Mathews, but I personally have Calvin ahead of both.
Owned Mathews last year and don’t trust him yet
