Let’s get to it!

Week 13: Starts of the Week

There are a handful of players that should absolutely explode in Week 13, like Arian Foster against the Titans (27th against the run), and Robert Griffin III against the Giants (25th against the run); However, that’s the obvious stuff. Below are some of the top starts of the week, but from a list of players a tier or more below the top dogs.

Elite Plays of the Week

C.J. Spiller (vs. JAC) – The runner has quietly been producing elite-like yardage numbers as of late, but because the touchdowns haven’t come his way over the last couple weeks, many fantasy owners just aren’t taking notice that the early-season Spiller is just about back to form. In Week 11, Spiller ran the ball 22 times for 91 yards (4.1) and pulled in 3 passes for 39 yards… In week 12, Spiller quietly had 107 yards on just 14 carries, which is 7.6 yards-a-pop! Now, the 14 carries should worry you, as again, the Bills just don’t commit to Spiller like they should. At 5-7 yards-per-carry, you’d think that the Bills would feed Spiller 20+ carries-per-game, and would know that if they did, they would be bound to win some games. Well, despite the worries about how Buffalo uses Spiller, he faces the Jaguars in Week 13 (29th against the run), who give up 1.27TDs per-game. Start Spiller this week and you may just get high-end RB1-type numbers, something along the lines of 100 rushing yards, 40 receiving off 3-4 receptions, and at least 1 long score. The sky is the limit for this kid dynasty-wise, only that Buffalo coaching staff stands in his way.

Bryce Brown (@DAL) – There is some chatter floating around out there right now suggesting that LeSean McCoy may not be able to play in Week 13 (possibly longer); this means that Brown, facing a hampered Dallas Cowboys defense, is set-up to once again produce fantasy RB1-type numbers in Week 13. Now, be sure to stay all over news wires on this one, as this advice would clearly change directions if McCoy was good to go for this upcoming week. That said, if you think about it, the Eagles will be even more cautions with McCoy now that they have a runner that can produce elite-like numbers; that puts the “take it slow and patient” plan in motion regarding a McCoy return. If Brown starts, and at this point we fully expect him to, 100+ rushing yards and at least 1 score seems likely.

Other Strong Plays

Trent Richardson (@OAK) – The Raiders are 28th against the run and Richardson is in full stride! He should be good for at least 100 and a score in Week 13.

Frank Gore (@STL) – The Rams might be 14th against the run, not good nor bad, but they have given up a whopping 14 rushing TDs on the season! Gore should be good for 120+ and at least one score in this one, especially if the 49ers get out to an early lead.

Reach of the Week

Jacquizz Rodgers (vs. NO) – The Saints are dead-last in the league against the run, so if you need a flex-play this week, Rodgers might just be your guy. Despite his 3.5 yards-per-carry average this year, Turner is tough to bench as well, given the match-up.

X’s Week 13 Start/Bench Thoughts

Quarterback

Aaron Rodgers has not yet lived up to the lofty fantasy expectations heaped upon him this season, having only gone over 300 yards passing in four games this season. Heck, if you count the Packers last four games of the 2011 season, including the one playoff loss, Rodgers only has four 300-yard passing games in his last 15. Pretty astounding when you think about it. At first glance predicting a 300-yard game from Rodgers doesn’t seem so bold, but when you really look at the numbers, it really is. This week against the Vikings, I’m looking for Rodgers to get his 5th 300+ yard game of the season, not just because his main weapon, Greg Jennings, is back in the lineup, but because the Packers are playing at home and looking to get back on track after the week 12 beat-down at the hands of the Giants. I figure his final tally to be 340 yards and 3 touchdowns – yes, one of those to Jennings.

Running Back

Lots of intrigue this week as some injuries over the last few weeks could thrust marginal fantasy producers into major roles. We’ll start in Chicago where Matt Forte re-injured his ailing ankle and it looks like he could miss a game this week, maybe more. There has been no official word out of Chicago as of yet, and that is troublesome in its own right. If he can’t go, Michael Bush will be a nice RB2 start this week against Seattle. The Giants lost Andre Brown to a broken leg Sunday night, so it looks as if rookie David Wilson is back as the primary backup to Ahmad Bradshaw. Wilson had fumbling issues early in the season, but he has some big play ability that makes him a logical pickup off fantasy wires this week. And two of the top players from the 2009 draft class are back in the spotlight after being left for dead by fantasy owners. Beanie Wells led Arizona with a 17/48 game and scored twice; at this point he looks like a decent bet to keep the primary job at least through the end of the season. In Denver, Knowshon Moreno made a case to be given another shot as the lead runner with a 20-for-85 rushing day. It’s been a while since we’ve seen that from Moreno, but I have to tell you I’m still not buying into him. Personally, I’d sell high right now, or even after this weekend if he has another good game. You may never get this chance again.

Wide Receiver

Lions receiver Titus Young was benched in week 12 and sent home for his poor attitude, something that has happened to him before. At this point it is unclear what will happen for the rest of this year, but the the beneficiary in the short term is Ryan Broyles. As the number two filling in for Young, Broyles put up stellar numbers on Thanksgiving, catching six passes for 126 yards. It never hurts a guy to be playing opposite Calvin Johnson, but Broyles looked very comfortable making plays and nothing like a rookie. I consider Broyles a nice add this late in the season, a guy that could certainly surprise down the stretch and end up a solid WR3 type player. He is certainly making the coaches decision to keep Young on the bench a much easier one. As for this week, I like his chances to put up another 100-yard game at home against a mediocre Colts defense if Young is indeed benched again.

    • cockykev, tough one as well. Shorts has been amazing this year, especially the last three games 100+ and 1, 80+ and 1, and then 100+ and 1…a phenomenal grab! That said, I don’t think I could sit Alfred Morris. It’s a very tough call. Other thoughts?

    • Joe, nice team first off! You’re going to have to watch the news on this one, as Amendola played 7 snaps last week. He is healing up, but faces SF, so you may want to roll with Michael Bush (assuming he starts, and I think he will). Bush is a sneaky-solid start for you as long as Forte is out. Good timing for your team if that works out.

  5. Smitty, MileHigh, love the info, appauld the stats. But I gotta ask… No love for my man Ryan Broyles? He’s the safety valve of Matt Stafford.

I clearly see him going for 70 plus yards and a TD his next game. He got good hands and a crisp route running ability.

Also I think Martin might be in for a tough outing again the Boys in TX. I’d be please to see the muscle hamster fiddle around 80 yards and a touch to go along with 20 yards in the air.

Lastly, can we all agree Chad Henne is a gosh darn savior? Blackmon, Shorts and Lewis have been revived since his anointment as the full time starter. He might just be in my top 15 for next year if his play continues. He has the weapons!!!

    • I have Broyles down for 65 yards WTCM but the TD is questionable. He only has 2 TDs on the season and hasn’t seen the end-zone since week 8 so its hard to project him for a score week to week. You could be right though.
