2014 Content

Let's have an honest conversation here. Start Bench Advice, Weekly Projections, and really all in-season content, it is all pretty "hit" and "miss" from week to week. This isn't to say one can't be more accurate than others with "start bench questions", but I'd almost put the mob (let's say 15 votes) against one man (including myself, or anyone) any day of the week.

So, the honest conversation is this.... Like any business, the amount of "product" and time spent on producing a product is managed and setup based on budgets. So, DraftCalc has a dedicated amount of resources and time spent setup for 2014, let's call it 100% of DC's Production to keep it simple.

I could be off-base here, but the off-season is 10x (maybe 20x) more important than the in-season, as the FORUMS ALONE can accomplish enough FREE advice giving to navigate through an In-Season. Sure, the rankings are nice during the season, and maybe there are some occasional In-Season updates to that... but why divide up resources and dedicated half of those resources to a part of the fantasy football season that really is more hit and miss than anything in terms of advice giving. Now, I'm not saying I don't wish I could just ramp up our Off-Season Product while keeping the amount of In-Season product we produce, but again, if being honest, there is only that 100% DC Production to divide up - It's set, and it needs to be distributed.

So, my big question is, would it be more valuable to this community, a big-time dynasty-based community, to shift a BIG, BIG, chunk, if not most all, the In-Season efforts/resources into the Off-Season, and let our 365-24-7 FREE Forum help us all navigate the In-Season?

I'm not sure how i understand going 100% offseason and then forums only during season is going to make offseason content any better??

They're 2 completely different times of year so i don't understand how either effects one another

Wow, I have to say, I was expecting most would like this idea, but so far 13 straight votes for creating more Off-Season Content, so the most intense Feb-Sept Draft Kit you've ever seen, with no paid product (just FREE Forums with Polls and forum driven content) during the season. This idea is really growing on me. I have a potential feature in the works that would only be possible to add under this scenario.

More features, more time spent, basically 100 percent of what I put into 365 days (time, resources, amount of features) we'd shove into FEB-SEPT, and it's not like the site wouldn't be packed during the In-Season on the forums, but essentially you'd have a FEB-SEPT paid product only. There is only so much that can be budgeted in, time wise and resource wise, I'm saying shove it all into FEB-SEPT. The features and content would increase a ton, especially with the addition of a feature I just can't see adding under the current state of how I spread out time and resources.

I'd have to say Smitty that time spent on rookie scouting and feature content felt like a throw in this past summer. I think more resources focused on such an integral part of the season for Dynasty owners would be a big help and I agree that in season the forums can support the house.

Well i can say I've never once read the projections.. Not here or anywhere, i honesty think they're a waste of time...

And waiver wire i usually don't pay attention to here or anywhere as in good dynasty leagues these guys usually aren't on waivers & i know myself who i want to add

That said i guess i have zero reason for in season content... My only thing is you may lose some people, a lot of re draft only guys out there that won't be giving you any $$$.... Less $$$ = less $ for upgrades/content to site which is why i don't think you should go away with in season completely, but imo weekly projections must quite a bit of time and are completely useless in Mt mind so those could go

Could you outsource weekly projections from Fantasy Sharks?

DraftCalc would become a dynasty content-driven powerhouse with such a shift, not to mention I'm sure we can do some IDP this way.

I don't pay much attention to the projections either. I do like weekly rankings...from folks I trust and who have a good record with it. They assist with the start/sit more than anything.

This is such a weird year, I would hesitate to make any drastic decisions. With that said, I am weakest on rookies. Anything to shore up this area of content would be helpful.

Get back to basics Smitty and do what you do best.

Weekly projections are a waste of time, to do them right requires a lot of stats about hits/misses for it to be worth me taking a peek. Another site does it right - they take the projections of all the major fantasy journalists and show how accurate they were and also breaks it down for how accurate per position they are so you can pick the QB projections from the guy who hits on his QB projections 85% of the time and so on and so forth. Also projections can't help you when Arian Foster hurts his hammy in the firs quarter so it's all useless.

Actually, you'd be surprised how many more draft-based subs are sold vs in season in this industry.

And, when out forum is second to none, we shouldn't lose anyone.

Not to mention, just because out in season is free, that doesn't mean we won't have a few free in season products, like weekly rankings. That would be free.

Projections are a waste of time, I agree with that. 20 other sites do them every week, and most are just the average production from said player with a bit of adjustments for matchup and injuries. It's all a crap shoot anyway. Rookie scouting would be my big thing too, as I am weakest in that area

No need for sit/start and weekly projections if your target audience is dynasty owners. However a weekly or twice a month article on who is worth a stash or which stashes might soon be start worthy and a monthly article discussing major changes in dynasty value would be nice for dynasty owners.

I have looked at probably 2 sit/start and 2 projection articles and at least glanced at all the waiver wire pickup articles. I have a feeling though there is a good percentage of redraft owners who have subscribed and who read those articles that are not active on the forums. Perhaps a study of when owners joined and how active they are on the forums would help you factor in these absent members in the poll results. I would love a 100% off-season product, but I suspect you would run off your redraft business in doing so.

Call it a Draft Calc draft and pay the fees for the year. I started with DC as a redraft guy Smitty, but after my first MFL Dynasty league draft with mods I was hooked. Nearly 6k posts later a monster has been born. Or participate in a start up draft and offer the winner with a free subscription the following year.
