Week 2 Start Bench Advice: 2013

Below you will find our Week 2 Start Bench Advice for the 2013 fantasy football season. Who should you start entering Week 2? Who should you sit? If you have players and start ‘em and sit ‘em dilemmas not mentioned below, be sure to post a comment at the end of the article and I, or one of our awesome DraftCalc moderators, will try and hit you back with an answer!

Also, don’t forget to check out our Week 2 Projections.

Let’s get to it!

Chris Givens at ATL

Chris Givens @ATL

Atlanta just surrendered 341 passing yards and passing 2TDs to the Saints, so this is a great match-up for Sam Bradford, Jared Cook and Chris Givens. Givens pulled in just 2 passes for 27 yards in Week 1 against the Cardinals, and people are already set to give up on him. This spells opportunity if you ask me! I’ve seen comments and forum posts this week where fantasy owners are already asking if they should release Givens in favor of a waiver wire guy. Wow. Two words: Week one! Not only should current Givens fantasy owners not overreact after one single week, Givens owners need to consider that Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson was assigned to shutdown Givens all day long in Week 1. Not only could Asante Samuel miss Week 2, Jared Cook’s Week 1 breakout party is going to, moving forward, keep defenses extremely-honest when it comes to covering Givens. While there are a few predicted breakout players that clearly command some concern heading into Week 2, Givens is not one of them, and there is a great shot his breakout party is this week in Atlanta; 5-6 receptions for 90-100 yards and 1TD sounds about right! Bradford should throw for 300 and 2, with Cook grabbing Bradford’s other score, along with about 70-90 of those yards!

Eddie Lacy at WAS

Eddie Lacy at WAS

The Redskins just surrendered 184 rushing yards and 1TD to LeSean McCoy, and the entire Philly offense ran for 264 yards and 2TDs. If there was ever a time to buy-low, it is before this Week 2 contest against the Redskins. I can see Eddie Lacy rushing for well over 120 yards, and he should punch in at least 1TD. After a monster Week 2 game, it won’t be a bad idea to test the trade waters when it comes to Lacy, and that goes for those that currently own him as well as those that plan to trade for him in the coming days. Don’t get me wrong, I think he can still have a good 2013 season, even with my long-term doubts about his foot/toe… long-term is very different than the now, which I’m considering 2013… selling high is never a bad idea, but know that I can see him having a successful first year, no question. Will I doubt him heading into 2014 and beyond? Let’s take it one year at a time for now, as I want to see how healthy he can remain.

Darren McFadden vs. JAC

Darren McFadden vs. JAC

The Jags gave up 120 rushing yards and a score in Week 1 against the Chiefs. While the Chiefs could have run the ball more in that game, Jamal Charles was racking up 4.8 yards-per-carry when he did carry the rock, so Darren McFadden should have a nice ground outing in this one, and of course he does a lot of his damage pulling in passes. With Jacksonville looking to contain Pryor on the ground, McFadden might rack-up some good yardage on a couple screen passes and dump offs. Pryor, who should throw for close to 200, rush for over 50 and have at least 1-2 total scores, is an exciting player to own right now, and hopefully you took our advice during the first two preseason weeks and you picked the guy up! His trade value isn’t holding consistent just yet, but in a couple weeks he could be a nice player to package into some 2-for-1 type deals.

Julian Edelman vs. NYJ

Julian Edelman vs. NYJ

With Danny Amendola likely to sit this one out with a groin injury, Julian Edelman gets shoved right back into Amendola’s role, a role that he was playing quite well in Week 1 when Amendola pulled up limp with the groin injury. Keep an eye on the last minute Amendola news, but even on the off chance that he plays, he isn’t 100 percent, and Edelman is going to get a lot of targets. Edelman should be good for 5-6 receptions for 70-90 yards and a score. Tom Brady should be good for 300 yards passing and 2-3 scores. Shane Vereen’s wrist injury is a huge bummer, as we had Vereen pegged as one of our biggest breakout predictions for all of 2013. He started off on fire, too, racking up 100 rushing yards, while pulling in 7 passes for 58 yards. Vereen is on short-term IR, but won’t be eligible to return until Week 11. What a lucky break (literally) for Stevan Ridley, who fumbled away his job to Vereen in Week 1, but clearly he will now get his starting job back, which means that he will be a strong weekly bet for 100 rushing yards.

Lamar Miller at IND

Lamar Miller at IND

Indy just gave up 171 rushing yards to the Raiders. Granted, 112 of those yards were Terrell Pryor’s, but this team can be run on, which is great news for Lamar Miller owners, who are not sure what to expect in this Week 2 game. Could Miller share carries in Week 2? Sure, it’s possible, and Daniel Thomas will certainly get some carries, but it’s tough to predict what that Dolphins’ coaching staff is going to do regarding dividing up the Week 2 rushing workload. What I do know is this… Miller is an elite talent, even though he only gained just 3 yards on 10 carries in Week 1… Miller is so fast and quick, all it takes is one nice long run and he is back in the spotlight, and Miami will want to roll with their play maker once he gets going. Again, a slower start than expected for Miller is possible, and at third- to fourth-round value, a slow start was built into his value… in fact, a slow start could even span into the next couple weeks; however, I’m not about to put this rising star on the bench after one single week of play, and neither should you, at least not for WR3/flex-like options! I expect 90-100 rushing yards out of Miller in this one, and he should also have a nice shot at a score.

Alshon Jeffery vs. MIN

Alshon Jeffery vs. MIN

At some point, Alshon Jeffery is going to get going, especially when teams play smart defense and double Marshall, who Cutler literally telegraphs to on almost every passing play. Don’t do anything crazy and bench a legit fantasy WR2 for the receiver, but if you’re hurting at your WR3 or flex spot this week, Alshon is a good look!

Ben Tate vs. TEN

Ben Tate vs. TEN

Ben Tate looked great in Week 1 (55 yards on just 9 carries, and he pulled in 2 passes, so the team isn’t afraid to throw his way). Foster, while healthy, is surely going to get at least 50 percent of the carries in Houston; however, Tate can do damage to the tune of 60 or so total yards and a strong shot at a score even in his reserve role. Imagine if he ever gets forced to start! Tate, Bernard Pierce and Christine Michael remain my favorite “stash” players heading into Weeks 2-16 (with Bryce Brown next on the list). If any single one of these four runners get into their team’s line-up, get ready!

  1. 1 PPR, I start 2 of these 3. Sproles, McFadden, Lacy. I was thinking Sproles and McFadden. Sound right?

    • Man, I think I go Sproles and Lacy. As said above, this match-up is gold for Lacy. Other thoughts? JR, Doggie, BDD, WTCM? It’s close, and any single one of those three can outscore the other during any given week.

  2. Hey smitty, what do you think about marlon brown this week? I feel like he can be a sleeper wr this week against the browns. He showed some talent last week, and if you look at the dolphins and browns game week 1, joe haden was covering mike wallace the whole time, which allowed for brian hartline to rack up quality points. Now obviously, Joe Flacco is a better qb than Tannehill and Browns D is most likely to focus on torrey smith and ray rice. I think that opens chances for brown as long as he has the talent to do so. What do you think? I have Chris Givens and Lamar Miller as other options for my flex too and my leagues ppr.

    • Brown is an ok player to start if you’re hurting. You aren’t asking if you should start him over Miller or Givens, though, right? Brown will likely be hit and miss each week, but someone to roster for sure. Good bye week guy maybe.

  3. I sure hope you’re right about Miller. I’ve got the option of starting T.Y. Hilton (another player with a slow start) or Miller. I find myself wanting to start Hilton as good as Andrew Luck’s been doing, afterall, Brandon Weeden just threw 53 times against the Dolphins, while the Browns only called 13 runs. If Luck studied the game film, he may have found a weakness. I find myself wanting to bench my star runningback as much as Tom Coflin!

    • Actually, you are not going to hear me say Hilton can’t outscore Miller, he easily could this week. Once he gets going, he will be huge IMO. It’s just a matter of when he has that big game. It may or may not be this week. I still think Hilton is gonna breakout.

  4. Smitty,

I’ve been trying to get some trade advice for a while in my Redraft PPR, 2 player keeper league. Dez owner just put up Dez/A.Johnson/Boldin on trading block saying that he’s looking for an “RB2″

His RB are Mathews, Lacy, Moreno, K.Davis, Helu
WR are Dez, A.Johnson, Boldin, Jeffrey
    TE is J.Graham

My RB are AP, Charles, Miller, Ball
WR are DT, James Jones, Mike Williams, Thompkins
    TE is J.Thomas

    – Do you believe in Boldin to be an upgrade at WR2 for rest of year!? I was thinking of throwing Ball and a WR for him. Otherwise I’m sure he’d want one of my stud RBs which I’d have to have him package Dez and someone?

OR… I could try to buy Givens low from another owner.

Also, I owe you big on spreading word out on Julius Thomas. WW pickup! Great call !!!

  5. Hey Smitty!

    I am in a 12 team, redraft, non-PPR league that starts 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, K, DEF. All TD’s 6pts.

I have both Cook and Thomas at TE.

My WR’s are: Julio, Britt, E.Sanders, Hopkins, Harvin
My RB’s: Richardson, Miller, Gio Bernard, Ball, Moreno

There is another team who is weak at TE (Fred Davis).

BUT, his WR’s are strong (I’m not sure he knows it!). He has: Marshall, Nicks, Givens, Hilton, Randle, Broyles

Also his RB depth is weak; Spiller, Ridley, BJGE, K.Hunter, M.Bush

Using Julius Thomas as a trade piece, how would you go about a trade offer. I was thinking of offering Thomas & Sanders for Nicks, or Thomas straight up for either Hilton or Givens.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Need to start 1 of 3 as my WR3 in a ppr league. Givens, Tavon Austin, or Hakeem Knicks ?

Just picked up Givens off waivers!

  9. Smitty,

What is your opinion of me trading:

    DMC
    Torrey smith

    For

    Montee Ball
    Julian Edelman

My 2 starting RBs are: Trent Richardson & Lamar Miller.

    Thanks,
    eggman

    • Redraft, no. I love Montee’s upside, but it is a wait and see. Dynasty I think it’s closer, but still when factoring in the now, even in a dynasty league, you still are getting some solid and underrated RB production from DMC. As much as I love Montee, this is not a buy-low scenario. Montee can be bought for pennies on the dollar… DMC should be valued higher.

  10. I just picked up Terrelle Pryor. Should I start him this week or Tom Brady? I am looking at the matchup for both teams. I am in a standard 12 team league.

    • I don’t care if I get this wrong this week, the answer is you never Bench Tom Brady. Never bench your studs, if healthy. Could this be the 1 time out of 7 that Pryor outscores Brady? Sure, and it’s still was the right move at the time even if Pryor outscores him. I never bench my studs.

  11. Thanks Smitty!

How about if I trade 1 for 1:

    Lamar Miller for Montee Ball?

My 2 other RBs are: Trent Richardson & DMC.

    Thanks,
    eggman

    • Ball should be bought low, and giving up Lamar Miller is the complete opposite of buying low. Giving Miller away at that price is like the reverse, when many drafted Miller as a 2nd round player or higher… that wasn’t the way to invest in Miller, and I definitely don’t sell low. Ball should be had, but at a major discount, as he isn’t the “starter” right now, so he should be traded as a bench guy right now, which screams value, sure. Definitely try to land Ball.

    • If healthy, DRich all the way. Monitor his health, he is a bit banged up. It could be precautionary, though. With Pead back, who should be merely eased back in week 2 (unless DRich is hurt), consider selling high on DRich if he has good success this week.

  12. We rarely hear about kickers. It’s such a volatile position but every point counts right?

Any sleepers at kicker for week 2? Maybe an under-the-radar waiver play?

  13. Chris Givens or Cecil Shorts this week? Henne makes Shorts a much better option than with Gabbert at the helm, & it’s the RAIDERS D for Christ sake. Then again, I understand the Falcons D being what it is & Samuel not playing. I’m very torn. Thoughts?

    • Henne does help Shorts, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he had 100 yards and 6 catches for a score one week, and 30 yards off 2 caches and zero scores the next. I start Givens, but no one is nuts liking Shorts this year even over guys like Givens. I am rolling the dice with Givens because I think he has his breakout party this week while defenses wonder which way Cook is running his routes.

  14. not benching dez and not starting torrey vs haden

so hopkins, james jones, or givens…leaning toward givens im still a big believer

    • Givens, although James Jones is always capable of a big game or a just decent game. That will be painful to watch him pull in 2TDs should he decide to play that way the week you sit him, but Givens was shutdown last week by design by AZ. Cook has made that impossible to game plan this week, and Cook will be focused on, although, not sure how successful anyone is going to be containing that dude. Givens.

  15. So smitty, who is a good flex play this week. I have Lamar Miller, Givens, and Hilton to choose from and its a ppr league. They all were disappointments week 1 but im sure at least one of them will do well week 2. What do you think? Thanks ahead of time

    • So tough, but for some reason I feel INDY is going to remind everyone how good Hilton is going to be, but since Givens is the for sure, it makes it real tough to decide. Miller has risk in that who knows if Thomas gets 40-50% of the touches this week, but in time, and maybe right away, he could exactly where we projected prior to week one? This is as close to a three way tie as they come. Givens might be safest, Hilton will do nothing or have 2TDs, Miller is a stud once/if he gets starter carries, but is that this week? Pick your risk level! Sorry I didn’t latch onto one player with conviction, but sometimes answering a question even I’m up in the air about is the wrong move. What do my projections say? Hilton? That’s my “you have to pick one” answer!

      • Chuck Pagano said that right after the game he talked with the coaching staff about using hilton a lot more… I feel like my matcup in fantasy is gonna be really really close, so I think I’ll go with the most safest IMO and choose Hilton. Thanks Smitty!

  16. Smitty, would you trade Doug Martin/ Jordan Cameron for Trent Richardson/TY Hilton. I have Jared Cook already

    • No, instead I go get a Montee Ball, Gio Bernard, Givens or Hilton using just Cameron. Don’t miss the boat on Givens along with Hilton… Same class of player!

  17. Hey Smitty, in my work league my supervisor just offered me Montee Ball for Gio Bernard. Non PPR big play bonus league. I have them pretty even but thinking I like Gio a tad bit better with the big play bonus, curious who you like better for this year. Would be my rb3 behind AP and Lamar Miller

    • As a rb3, Gio is better for the role, as he is almost guaranteed to see more touches as the season rolls along. I love Montee’s upside, but he is boom or bust and has current value as a RB4/5 (easily with RB2 upside)… Gio is already RB3/flex like, also with RB2 upside… Keep your job first off (if your boss is like that lol), but if you can keep both, I’d keep both! ;)

      • Haha thanks for quick reply Smitty. Love both and was hoping to draft Ball as well but my work league actually pretty competitive this year. I’ll have to stick with Gio and hopefully buy Ball cheaper next week possibly

    • While anything can happen, and anyone can outscore anyone, Miller. It’s crazy what one week will do to a guy’s value :)

  18. Smitty,

Got smoked in week 1 for my work league. .5 pt PPR league.
    I need your help again.

Not sure who to start for WR2.

WR: Marshall, TY, Givens, Mike Williams, Lance Moore, K.Thompkins.

I could use one in flex but RB’s are Rice, MJD, D.Murray and R.Mathews.

    My thought is to start:
    RB: Rice, MJD
WR: Marshall, TY or Givens or Thompkins or even Mike Williams.
    Flex: D.Murray or third WR.

    Thoughts?

  19. I am deciding between Boldin,Givens and Shorts. I see you already picked Givens over Shorts. Would you go Givens over Boldin? .5 ppr scoring.

    • I hate benching Givens, and my answer is can you find a way to start both… but Boldin commands a start given his Week 1 outing. Givens is that WR3 you hope will drop WR2 numbers, and he could and probably will. Boldin is already that WR2 and can drop WR1 numbers on occasion. Despite Boldin being a must-start each week, it pains me to say sit Givens as I see him breaking out here..

  20. Doug Baldwin or Ty Hilton in a PPR this week?

It’s normally a non-issue but Baldwin always torches the Niners.

    • While anything can happen, TY Hilton is still a huge breakout of mine. Could it be a week or two from now? Sure, anything is possible, but it sounds like Indy is going to use him more this week, and he is a monster once he gets the targets. All he needs is the targets!

  21. Why do I have a gut feeling about Stephen Hill tonight? Think I am crazy for wanting to start him over Gio?

  22. standard scoring 12 team league.
wondering what you guys think of this trade.
    i get – t. rich, givens, j.cook
give up – ajg, v. cruz, j. thomas

    • Of course what it does to your lineup can make or break the evaluation, but it’s close player for player. But, if you needed WRs and had RB depth, of course it would look good to get the WRs. I kind of think the TRich side will look really good in a couple weeks, as TRich should get used more moving forward, and Givens will look much stronger on paper once/if he breaks out. I really think Givens will turn into the kind of player that’s just a touch below a Cruz type. I could be wrong, or I could be a year early, but I still feel that way. Cook and Thomas are both top 5TEs, but Cook feels like a top 2TE this year, Thomas more of a 3-5. AJG is a beast, but again it comes down to team need.

the rest of my team is:
        qb – wilson
        rb – m. ball, l. miller
        wr – j.jones, ty and c. patterson

i just think their poor showing in week 1 got me spooked. i’ll probably hold off for a few more weeks; with my fingers crossed.

        • So you would have:

          Russell Wilson
          Lamar Miller
          Montee Ball
          AJ Green
          Julio Jones
          Victor Cruz
Julius Thomas at TE? or only WRs? Makes a big difference

          vs.

          Russell Wilson
          Trent Richardson
          Lamar Miller
          Julio Jones
          Chris Givens
          TY Hilton
          Jared Cook

I think I go with team 2, especially if you start a TE. If you don’t, it still seems like a strong team. Givens is the key.

  23. Need some Starting lineup help in several spots… all PPRs

    1. Kaepernick or RG3
    2. J. Cook, Mi Floyd, M Austin, or D Hopkins for WR/TE3 (1pt/15yds rec)
    3. Luck or RG3
    4. A. Jeffery or D Hopkins for Flex
    5. C Givens, TY Hilton or A Bradshaw for Flex

    Any suggestions would be appreciated…

    • 1. Kaep is the safer start, for now.
      2. Cook is safest
      3. Luck, but RG3 is capable of making this a more difficult decision in a few weeks
      4. This is a coin toss, as either could go quiet during any given week, or have a 100-yard game. Both have bright futures.
      5. Close one. Bradshaw could se more and more touches, but i wait and see on him. He could go off on your bench with a wait and see approach, but i take that risk given how secure Hilton and Givens feel. Man, so close between these two, as both are breakout candidates this year and had rough week 1 outings. Givens was shutdown by design by AZ in Week 1, so his disappointing outing was dude to defensive game planning. With Cook’s breakout in Week 1, I don’t see how Givens is focused on in Week 2, which means a big game. Hilton is not used right, but he will be. Givens is the safest play, while Hilton is riskier, as he can get you 2 catches for 20 yards or 120 and a score. You gotta decide if you want a safe 90 and a score from Givens, or the risk of bust, but a lot more points if he is used properly. Good problems to have, but they are tough calls to make.
